My old DHB M1 spd shoes are on their last legs after 2 and a half years of use and abuse, and I'm looking at new mtb spd shoes at the mo. I liked the m1's but I would like the next shoes to be a bit more weatherproof and have protection for my ankles also if they have cleats/studs fitted would be good but not a deal breaker.. my budget is around £100/€130 tops. I was looking at Shimano AM51s but can't find any in my size(44) in the LBS or online. Was also looking at some mavic alpine XL's, anyone have them? any good?
Any suggestions/advice welcome.

Cheaper/easier/more effective to buy waterproof socks (Sealskins or army surplus) than shoes.....

Not aware of any shoes that come with cleats, after all you may be using shimano pedals or crank brothers or use some other cleat design......
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

I already use sealskinz socks. But my shoes are starting to rip along the edge of the sole so need to be replaced. As for the cleats I meant studs like on football/rugby boots on the front of the shoe.

I'm not aware of many MTB shoes that have studs on them, and I'm not sure why you'd want them...
I really rate my five ten freeriders, definitely can't go wrong with them, so their SPD equivalent (cyclone or minnaar for a little more) can't be bad either. They're really comfy and warm. I have some shimano racy XC style SPD shoes and they're crap, not waterproof or windproof at all, my feet go numb after about 15 minutes riding in them in winter. My five tens aren't waterproof either, but my feet still stay toasty in winter with a couple of pairs of socks, no matter how wet they get. In fact I think I've just convinced myself to buy some five ten SPD shoes...

Some xc cx race shoes come with studs, good for short steep muddy carry bike quickly situations

ah, my shimano ones have rubber ones at the front, they don't really do much though, my freeriders are better for walking/pushing in.
