Handlebar Replacement

Could someone help please. I bought a replacement handlebar for my wifes bike as she didn't like the straight the Spech Cube came with. I bought a curved city type but when I came to fit the LX rapidfire shifters and the brake levers I found they wouldn't go on as the new bar is 24mm wide whereas the origional was 23mm wide. I tried to force the shifters and levers open a bit more but didn't want to break them. Is the only solution to take it back but struggled to find a bar in the first place
