Re-Painting A Mountain Bike

Does anyone know how you would go about re-spraying a mountain bike? How tough is it?
I have just bought a Trek Cobia, which I adore, but the colour scheme is dreadful. Trek make fantastic bikes, but their graphic design team should all be sacked. Whilst I am not vein, riding next to my girlfriends Felt and a friends Ghost I was the subject of much mirth, and my bike has been christened the 'Big Red Engine.'
I would assume you strip it back to metal and then go from there?
