Hi,

I'm having an issue with an everyday bike with a threaded headset. When I cycle it, it feels like I've got heavy shopping bags on each handlebar. I've tried tightening the headset a bit, but it hasn't made any difference. Can anyone suggest what might be up with it?

Sounds like headset stiction caused by pitted bearing surfaces. It's quite likely that the cups will need replacing, depending on its age. I've had some success with cleaning the cups up and polishing them with a metal polish to restore some of the smoothness. I've never seen this polishing recommended anywhere, but it seemed like a reasonable idea to me. If you do take it to bits, pack it with grease on reassembly.

Edit: See here for a really decent guide
Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.

Threaded heaset start from about £20 for a resonable sealed one. There is tifosi one I keep for that purpose. Pitting will not be removed by polishing, it is often too deep. £20 for a new headset + half hours labour or probably a lot less for it to be fitted. Job done.
