There's some grumbling on tw@tter about some tv ad shown by the BBC that shows a cyclist ripping off a mirror (for no reason).
Anyone seen it?

I'd assumed it was an accidental collision -m I'd not given it that much thought TBH.1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Who am I kidding?)

from twitter, "Anyone else catch the BBC ad with various road users? Cyclist they show is wearing headphones and scraps a wingmirror as they filter!"
I think its a advert typecasting cyclists as a criminal, reckless road users, but wanna see it for myself0 -

There were two cyclists in the 'Everything is politics' trailer. One brushes past a car breaking the wing mirror. The other is clipped in waiting at some lights with his hand on a car to stay upright.
So why didn't they show motorists on mobile phones and habitually speeding0 -

Hardly ripping off a mirror....Doesn't look great for cyclists, but it is only an advert.0

I think... it's meant more to show lack of space for cyclists but of course will raised by the car massif as a reason we should be used as hunting bait. Now there's a cross over sport that might be fun...Le Cannon [98 Cannondale M400] [FCN: 8]

If it is meant to demonstrate lack of space for cyclist then it doesn't do a great job, it just stereo types them as entities that might whack your mirror or aggressively put the palm of their hand on your car.0

Er, am I the only one that thinks this wasn't that bad?
It was a hand on a bus window, not a car. And it showed a cyclist stuck in heavy traffic brushing past (not ripping off) a wingmirror. What I took away from those two vignettes was that there isn't enough space for cyclists on our roads.
I thought it was quite a good advert actually...0 -
Did I miss something?
Am I meant to be angry at something?
Could someone please point me at what I'm meant to be angry at? So far I'm just confused....Chunky Cyclists need your love too! :-)

Surely this advert is successful in a couple of areas. Firstly, as it aims to do, it shows that politics affects pretty much everything in life. Secondly (and I'm not so sure this was intentional) it shows how powerful media can be in 'spinning the story' to help 'consumers' towards an intended (or perhaps unintended) conclusion.Nobody told me we had a communication problem0

It's not quite the man-throwing-bike-down-and-jumping-onto-bonnet-of-car-in-fit-of-rage I saw when I first started commuting as a teenager.0

Yeh it's not that bad once I'd finally seen it, but most people have an irrational and negative view of cyclists and I think the advert might hit a chord with those motorons0
-
First time I saw it, it appeared to be making the point that the roads are crowded. I also wondered how long before someone on here questioned it - a couple of weeks isn't bad tbh.
Re drivers being swayed by it, I wouldn't worry. The BBC could show cyclists handing out kittens to orphans and some motorists would still find reason to despise us. Meh, is the correct response.0 -
