Sorry this is going to be an annoying question from someone new to cycling, but how does the worls champion (Cav), become so. Is it points accumulated during the year like say, Formula 1, or soemthing different?

Sorry just curious how it works.

Thanks in advance,
Graham

There's a World Championship race. It's held in September, is raced as national teams, not the usual pro teams and is at a different location each year, with a different types of course each year. This is the end of last year's race: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oze48Z0FDdo

There's also the World Tour ranking, which is done on a points system (won by Gilbert last year), but no-one really cares about that.

And when you watch the Tour de France you'll see that for the time trials, Tony Martin is WC.

There are certain fans who prefer one-day racing (where the only thing that matters is who crosses the finish line first) to stages races, who get very over-excited about the Worlds as you can imagine!

Many years back, there was a near-equivalent to the way the F1 Championship was decided, the old Super Prestige Pernod. Points were awarded at different races, if memory serves me correct, they were various of the Classics (Paris-Roubaix etc), stage races (Both the lesser ones, like Romandie & the Grand Tours), plus some oddities like the Grand Prix de Nations timetrial.

The current holder is Steven Roche, he's the longest holder too, since the series finished in 1987!

Well, that's a relief- couldn't work out why that happened.
