What used bike for £500?

After a used bike to maximise on the bike I can get as I wont get much new for £500, someone offered me £260 for my Hardrock, and seems I wasnt overly keen on it and I only paid £160 for it I bit their hand off!
Few details: Im 5ft 10 and it will be used for places like Delamere, Rivington, Llandegla, the Lakes etc etc
Can stretch more for the right bike but dont really want to? Are Cube any good? Seen a Cube Acid for £475

I meant more so what bikes do people recommend that sell for around 500, then I can obviously check it out, didn't think it was such an unreasonable request myself?0

But that doesnt really help me, I bought a Hardrock which are £400 new and thought it was a good bike and turned out it wasn't, this wasnt a find me a bike so I can go and buy it, I'm asking for suggestions on bikes so I can then have more of an idea...0
