so, go out for a spin, no probs , up to 100 miles

go to bed and the pain in the left leg is horrendous, all the way up the outside of the leg, can hardly sleep

next day, everything's fine, pain is only during the night

when the leg goes green and starts to smell, I might go to the doctors, but just wondering if anyone has any ideas ?

You have no bike insurance, so you put it under your matress, just like me. Thats why I am a tight grumpy sleepless fokker in discomfort. (Plenty of them here, thats why your not getting many replies).

I saw the title of this thread and thought...hmmn, what could it be about? Mercifully it's leg pain. What sort of pain is it?
Cramp like? Throbbing, stabbing or burning?

hard to describe, probably throbbing is nearest, not related to pressure ie if I lie on the other side or on me back, it doesn't ease

Outside of leg? Sounds like your IT band. The fact that you're getting it lying down but not standing suggests that the trigger is something postural, on top of the exercise.
Swim. Bike. Run. Yeah. That's what I used to do.

I agree that ITB is most likely candidate, but your femoral nerve also tracks that way, you might have aggravated it and when lying down you are compressing it a little.

If it continues, best idea is to talk to the Dr before it goes green.

erm, no and no. Not even sure what the usual ways would be, but will investigate, thanks

Try remedies for ITB and Piriformis Syndrome
Both may worsen the problem at first

I have a problem with my ITB. If your problem is with the (left) ITB, you may find that this stretch helps.

    1) Lie on back
    2) Raise knees so that thighs are perpendicular to the gorund
    3) Place right thigh behind left one
    4) Clasp hands behind right knee and pull towards your chest.
    5) Hold for 4-5 secs, release and repeat.

Morning and evening - seems to work for me. . .

Yep, worked for Graeme Obree when at the first failed attempt of the hour, he used the water clock method: Drink a pint of water and you will wake up have to get up to pee and then do some stretching, then drink another pint of water etc.
    Sounds fun does'nt it?
