Beginner off road

Help please!
A colleague is looking to start biking and wants something that can be used mostly on the road, but sometimes with a blast round the local trails.
The 3 options he has come up with are.....
Specialized Crosstrail
Trek 8.5 DS
Cannondale Quick CX
Any thoughts, reviews or suggestions would be fantastic???
