hello everyone

new here in MTBing, i have tried it once, and i was hooked.

Anyways i'm pretty sure my beginner bike will be either a CUBE Acid 2011 or an Attention 2012 - they cost pretty much the same - so which to buy?
The Acid has the old dart 3 - is the new XC 28 any better?
The Acid has XT rear derailleur, the attention SLX..

Anyways, could you help me analyze the spec's.

Thx in advance

The Acid is the better bet, only slightly though - better drivertain, lighter, and the Dart 3 is lighter than the XC28.

I really don't see why anyone would spend £540 on a bike with such bad forks. A fork upgrade is expensive and takes a reasonable amount of work to upgrade, so I can't see the point in buying a bike that is going to need a fork upgrade form the moment you actually start getting into MTB'ing and riding harder and more regularly.

IMO you should be buying a Rockshox Recon SIlver (last years Tora) or Suntour Raidon/Epicon as a minimum if you are going to really be using the bike a lot. The Darts/XC28 and rated poorly by most press and riders alike, and for £499
you can get a Rockrider 8.1 that is imo a much stronger overall bike for the money.

Don't skimp on the fork on your first "real" bike, and that doesn't mean you have to spend a fortune either. Sure, the Cube frames are good, and the drivetrain decent, but that always means a compromise somewhere on spec, and personally i'd rather it not be the fork. I prefer a good all-round spec rather than one part very good one part bad.

I'm not sure as to whether i dare buy one of those bikes - i dont know anything about the frames etc? And also there's a lot of SRAM pars, and Deore on the bikes drivetrain, and one with only 20 speed? - i figured Deore XT or SLX was better than any of these?

My priorities are putting the drivetrain over the suspension, since i guess an XC 28 is as durable as a recon etc. plus, i can service a fork with spring myself..

About the XC 28 vs Dart3 - i think i heard something about the Dart3 that it has some sort of plastic-bushing that's been changed to metal on the XC 28 - isn't the XC 28 the replacement for Dart3?

Regarding the drivetrain-parts - is there much difference in durability between the two setups of Attention '12 vs. Acis '11 ?

I'm leaning on the Attention - i can get it at 629EUR vs. the Acid 700EUR (with shipping)... What to do?

You should be putting suspension as the priority if riding in the rough stuff. There is no difference in durabilty of the drivetrains really, just one is a little lighter.

Why would you think an XC28 was as durable as a Recon, which is a better equipped model? The XC28 is basically the lowest of the low Rock Shox has to offer. The drivetrain is not unimportant, but I would much rather have an average drivetrain and a good fork, than a good drivetrain and a crappy fork. The fork is the thing that dictates how your ride will feel, and if you buy crap then you will have a crappy ride on anything more than a dirttrack. Not to mention that the drivetrain (or the bits that really matter) is much cheaper and less hassle to upgrade than a fork.

Sure, that was just what i thought / got from reading online and speaking to people - so i guess i was wrong :-)
Still, the reason i wrote here, was to correct my misunderstandings ..

Then how about a CUBE Acid 2012 - this has Recon TK air - and still XT rear derailleur - probably land a bit outside my budget, but ...
