Don't expect any improvement in power transfer. I'm not convinced that Speedplays aren't simply posh M520s with roadie credibility. I've not tried Speedplays to be fair but I've never heard anything on here to make me think otherwise.
My thoughts entirely - they rather contradict the 'greater surface area' selling point of road pedals, as they are essentially tiny pedals that clip into a stiff shoes.

    Totally agree.

SPDs with carbon soled MTB shoes offer everything Speedplays offer but with advantages:
    1. Less complexity
    2. Far better handling of water and dirt without clogging
    3. Zero maintenance/adjustment needed
    4. The ability to easily walk
    5. No need for separate road shoes
    6. Significantly lower cost

I'm puzzled why you would shell out for Speedplays?
