I have got 2k to spend on a Canyon, This will be my first road bike so wish to gather opinions.
Is Di2 gearing worth the £500 extra?
Is a carbon frame worth the £300 extra?
When i say extra i am talking about the ultegra specced Ultimate..
Thanks for any help

I would go ultimate CF 9.0 Pro but also look at Rose Bikes as i think they do a CF Di2 for just over £2k.

Why a Canyon? 2K is a lot to spend on your first road bike. What happens if you don't like it?

If you are going to spend 2 grand then at least at Canyon you'll get a decent bike with a good spec. At Scott/Specialized/Trek etc it would probably still come with 2kg wheels!

I have an Ultimate and had a SLX. If buying now I'd probably go for the CF frame (£800 with race licence ;)) and stick sram force/ red and mavic ksyrium elites on it.

My Ultimate has dura ace 7900 and Mavic SLR's. Stunning bikes.

I'm also faced with a similar decision - trying to decide between the CF 9.0 Pro or the CF SLX 8.0. As someone who's only used SRAM Apex/Rival on a hybrid bike I have no idea whether to spend slightly more on the SLX and get Dura-Ace or just get the cheaper Campag Chorus on the Pro.

I just thinks its a better bike with the campag and elite wheels. As i said on a previous post if i were you i would wait for the TDF deals as you may save some dosh.

Check this out though as it seems good value and you can configure the components i.e. bars, saddle etc to suit you and your budget.

I recently bought a Canyon Ultimate CF 9.0 and it arrived last week. I have only had the opportunity to ride it a couple of times so far but it is an absolutely brilliant bike. Personally, I think it would be quite difficult to buy something significantly better for around the same price.

A small piece of advice though is to run through the whole buying process once to see how much it will actually cost including postage and any spec changes you want, as it will be more than the headline price.

Re the gearing this is what i think.

Those who have it love it and the reviews are all positive. Those who dont have it would like to have it but the cost is not justified unless you have plenty of disposable income. Looks wise it makes a sleek racing bike look a bit odd but this is a minor issue. So if it were a bit more affordable loads of people would have it so in a few years i will be standard on many bikes. My view is if i were buying a new bike now at £2k+ i would have to go Di2 but if i were keeping my existing bike no way would i pay to do an upgrade.

for 2k why not consider other brands to get a good idea of their geo and then compare to canyon as your "dream" bike may not suit you.

suggestion that i would make is check out the cycling plus bike of the year round-up, as the top 5 bikes there are all around 1.8-2kish so might be worth looking into them, ie the focus is a pretty amazing bike even compared to canyons.

p.s it comes down to frame vs gear it seems, the SLX is very nice carbon while the other is pretty much gear top spec with a high spec ali frame, personally id go with frame over gear as gear wears out over time while a solid frame is where the bikes heart is.

Im just looking at getting a Canyon CF SLX too. Went for a bike fitting at bikedynamics.co.uk and they said that the 60cm would be a good size for me. I haven't pushed the button yet for two reasons. I am just wondering whether to wait until:
    1) TdF and possibly get a discount?
    2) Wait until a new version of this frame comes out?

The reason for the second point is that most bikes seem to be moving towards internal cabling / BB30 (like the Aluminum Canyon) and possibly Ultegra Di2 (although I know this is a preference option for most people).

I just wonder if buying now, I might get something outdated in about 4 months...

And miss out on probably the best 4 months of the year for cycling

If you worry about something becoming out-dated you'll never buy anything at all! If it's your first road bike and you find you really enjoy cycling then it certainly won't be your last anyway, it's the nature of the beast with cycling...always something else you fancy

....and the new ultimate CF might have the same geometry as the ultimate AL if that makes a difference! I'm having the same problem in deciding whether to wait for a new version of the ultmate CF 9.0.
Might have a look at a Giant tcr composite 1.
