i run a 53/39 usually. i live and ride mainly in warwickshire. i do quite a bit of mtb'ing in wales so know what i'm up against.i'm quite a decent climber but would i be better with a compact (are the climbs really steep?)

Not sure about the new route but the last time I did it (09 I think) the climbs were more of the long steady variety. I was fine on a standard double and I wasn't racing at that stage so wasn't super fit.

I think the Devils Elbow makes an appearance this year. You'll be fine on the Bwlch and Rhigos but the Devils Elbow is nasty'ish albeit fairly short.

You maybe fine on a standard setup, but you may want to go compact as a precaution and if you want to fly down the hills have an 11tooth at the bottom.
