Hi all,
I have a pal who wants a new bike and has asked for my advice.
I advised him to go for the Rockrider 8.1 based on what I have read on here.
However he says his budget was 300 quid, now pushed to 400 quid.
Anyway he went to Halfords who advised that the Voodoo Bantu was far superior and that SRAM brakes on the Carrerra were junk. This wiffed of BS but thought I'd ask the learned folk on here for some input on what they think is the better buy.

Right I've spoken to him more and what hard tail mountain bike would people recommend under 400 quid but with v-brakes not disc?

Most of his riding is commuting on cycle paths and the occasional gentle off roading so he thinks he'd prefer v's due to maintenance.winter beast: http://i497.photobucket.com/albums/rr34 ... uff016.jpg

Why not look at a road bike or a hybrid then? A big chunky mountain bike will be heavy and un-efficient on cycle pathsSTEFANOS4784 wrote:he thinks he'd prefer v's due to maintenance.
I would say hydro discs are easier to maintain than v's. I wouldn't expect your mate to have to do much more than change the pads once a year.0 -
Maybe he doesn't want an MTB. Maybe he just thinks he does!
The Vulcan doesn't have SRAM brakes, they are Clarks, does have SRAM gears (nowt wrong with them), but the Bantu is a better bike and worth the extra (and a bit more).Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
So what makes the Bantu better? Seems heavy....Also he's not sure he likes the look of it :? Wish I could persuade him into a road/cyclocross bike but no chance. Also he has a Sirrus hybrid at the mo and hates it.winter beast: http://i497.photobucket.com/albums/rr34 ... uff016.jpg

Yes the Voodoo has Clarks SX brakes and from I've read they are a bit crap, it put me off the Carrera Kraken when I was looking at that.
Voodoo:
- much better suspension
- possibly better brakes
- 15.2KG is pretty heavy but then the Vulcan is only 0.5KG lighter if those weights are correct
Vulcan
- worse suspension
- possibly better gears
not much in it really except for that suspension0
