Marzocchi Preload sleaves

Hi, bit of a complicated and lengthly, so bare with my please.
Recentely got a Marzocchi 120mm MX Pro ETA fork off ebay but I'm wanting to change it to 100mm travel to suit my frame better (would have originally came with a 100mm dirt jump fork).
I've discovered, after trailing through various forums, that the 85mm version has a 40mm preload spacer, the 100mm version has a 15mm spacer and the 120mm version has no spacer. This is also confirmed by the parts page in the PDF users manual.
I contacted the spares dept at Marzocchi and was told they no longer sell the part so it looks like I'll have to fashion one of my own or find someone who has the 15mm preload spacer and doesn't want it. My question is this however: How does 'adding' a spacer lower the forks?
Just can't get my head around it.
Or am I just having a blonde moment?!

If a spacer is added to the neagtive spring on the push rod, then the forks can't extend as far.0
