Avid Brake Fluid

I have Avid Elixir 1 hydaulic brakes on my Boardman Comp HT which, according to Avids specs, uses DOT 4 fluid.

When I come to bleeding the brakes would I be able to use DOT 5.1 fluid, ie can I just use DOT 5.1 for the bleed or do I need to completely flush out the old DOT 4 fluid first? Further to this, are these brakes even compatible with DOT 5.1?

I ask becasue all the bleed kits I have seen seem to come with DOT 5.1 fluid.

Dot3 or 4 or 5.1 will all be fine and are all mixable.

use and do as you want.
