... a Single Speed.

Basically i have been experimenting on my commute and seeing if i can do it without changing gear, which i can. So i thought why maintain a geared commuter when i can get a Single Speed, however now i am just confused.

I can get to/from work using the 50/18 so what sort of gearing should i go for if i get an off the peg single speed (assuming that they come with differing ratio's) something like a 48/15 (what the langster comes in)?

Also i dont really want any thing Hipster and i want full size drops and front and rear brakes. any suggestions or shall i just trawl ebay and get a 2nd hand Raleigh and convert it myself?

Thoughts, suggestions and offers of your shed bikes greatly welcome.

Ahhh a singlespeed - don't forget to grow a goatee and book a meeting for 6 months time to your local knee clinic, also get used to people muttering because you are blocking them at lights because you pull away so slow - but you will save about 1kg weight on your bike :)

Ultimate gear used to be 42/16 Gets up anything and cruises well on flat.

Have a district and it is 55/22 which is pretty much the same gear. Spins out at about 23 mph and I get up 9% hill on the way in. Is no slower than my road bike for my commute

Err don't get this comment really, riding a Genesis Day One for well over a year now and for over 6 months fixed. No issues with my knees what so ever. Just slow my cadence gently when coming to a stop. Just made me more aware of controlling my momentum.

As a bonus though my cadence is much more even and powerful. Noticeable increase in leg speed too.

Do it, just have brakes as well.
