hi guys

i currently have a shimano xt m751 setup and i want to convert it to a 1x10 setup, 11-36t on rear and 32t on the front.

I know the parts i would need for the chain and casette etc,

but what would i need to convert my crank set? it already has the 32t in the middle, can i use this?

would i need a new bb?

thanks guys

You can use the crank set but not the ring.

You'll be better off with a single ring specific chainring. These have slightly longer teeth and no shifting guides so will hold the chain better.

Depending on what chain retention method you are going for you may be able to use your crankset. I just upgraded my bike from 2x9 to 1x10 and bought a new xt triple chainset and an e13 lg1+. I had to saw the granny ring tabs off the cranks to stop them rubbing on the chain guide.

    Behave.

Just buy a set of shorter chain ring bolts, and a 10 speed compatible 32 tooth ring and get them on your existing crankset. Chain retention (if you want it) can be dealt with in a myriad of manners depending on whether you have ISCG mounts or end up with a BB mounted system.

A shimano compatible one. Count the number of arms, measure the pitch circle diameter of the holes (how far apart they are ACROSS the bottom bracket and then get that Google arm working. I run a Middleburn ring (34t).

most four bolt chainrings these days are the same BCD, 104mm (IIRC), it's not exactly easy to get the wrong one.

But yeah, you'll need a single-ring specific ring.

On the hardtail I went with a single 34t (FSA, sold as a DH ring but it's fine for anything), put that on the middle of my old 3x9 crank. However I had to file the crank a bit to fit it in the middle. Then I've got a bash on the outside and currently using a JumpStop on the other side to keep it on. Though it still manages to jump off and get jammed under the stop gadget. Not sure why or how it's even physically possible as the gap is too small and good tension in the chain, but it does. May have to resort to a chain device. Just wanted to keep it simple and reuse the Raceface bash I had.
