Routes through Wales - suggestions?

I'm planning a ride from Doncaster to Tenby in SW Wales over a 3 day trip.

I'm not too familiar with South or Central Wales and so I'm not too sure which way to plot the route. I've walked the Offas Dyke Trail and done plenty of hiking in Snowdonia and so the border areas and the North are quite familiar (and lovely) but otherwise I'm a bit in the dark.

Is there anywhere in particular that you would rate as an area that *must* be covered? I'm happy climbing hills and with pretty much any terrain just as long as I'm on tarmac.

Any thoughts? I'm considering two broad options -

1. Cross the Peak District via Sheffield and drop into Wales around the Crewe/Wrexham lattitude

2. Skirt the southern edge of the Peaks and get into Wales by passing between Stoke and Birmingham via Shrewsbury.

From there onwards though it's a bit of a blank page...
