Hi,
just bought a 2nd hand Felt Q500 Frame (think its 2008) and (from a spec on a website) it takes a:
++++
Semi-Integrated 1 1/8” Aheadset - Cane Creek Type, Steel Cups, Caged Bearing, with Alloy Laser Top Cap, Custom Curved 1 x 15mm + 2 x 5mm Straight Washers
++++
Can I buy any 'semi integrated 1 1/8" headset' or do I need to check sizing etc - the old cups still in frame but looks like roughly 50mm the diameter of the flared frame tube where the headset cups fit in.
For example should these headsets fit ok ?

As long as there is enough depth to press them in then they are to spec."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

This is a very thorough explanation of the mysterious world of headsets: scroll down a bit past the guff about industry standards to get to the explanation.

If your head tube is 44mm internal diameter a SSC Integrato Headset will fit which is what I have, not as cheap as the ones you've linked though.

Thanks guys, have had a quick look at your links and still mystified.
Here are some images of what I have got:

The cups are still in the frame - do I leave them in or are they part of the replacement headset ?
The internal diameter of the cups (ie the outer diameter of the bearings to go in them looks to be just over 40mm)
Do I need to knock the cups out and measure the frame diameter before buying anything ?0 -
Ok guys, had a cup of coffee and bit more read of your links and think I need a ZS44/30
Thanks for your help, please shout if you think I have the wrong end of the stick.
Looking for something cheapish as its a build for my son so on a tightish budget (which is already shot).0 -
Halfords do the FSA one quite cheap,

.... or I have one in good condition that's just come out a Banshee frame, one piece design, they are solid as heck as the one in my Gryphon commuter is still going strong despite being pulled from my Kraken frame which looked like it had been stored ina ditch!

Those cups will need to come out!Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
Thanks The Beginner,
Going for one of these AEST headsets off of ebay - they get a mention on these forums when searching - Supersonic thinks AEST are decent quality - look quite swish too:
