Helmet noise

Are there some helmets that create less wind noise than others?
As mine sounds like that constant noise you get when on a plane, but take off the helmet and the noise is drastically reduced...
Would be nice to be able to hear more of whats around me while cycling, than just the noise of the air blasting through the helmet.

thanks for your thoughts.

Mog.

possibly some are better than others, but the only way to know is to take several out on the road and try them. that is likely to be impossible. You will get used to it. Even riding without a helmet will give you wind noise at times.

I've had it with every helmet I have, depends on wind/riding speed, direction of wind etc.

One of the reasons why i don't wear one - the noise of the air blowing though the vents.... apparently the constant drone can damage hearing

There's your answer. Take it off. There are plenty of reasons why I don't wear one, and this is one of them.

    Enjoy the ride.

I've never noticed any difference in wind noise with/without a helmet. You could always look at these to channel air around your ear. http://www.slipstreamz.com/content.asp?subID=9#

It's probably one of the many things you only notice for a moment or two and then it effectively dissappears as you become accustomed to it. Like wearing a helmet full stop - I don't notice I'm wearing the helmet anyway so there isn't really a good reason not to wear it.

Stop thinking about the noise and it will go away!

Yeah, I suppose if you constantly look for differences you'll find them. Just like those who will see increased performance after shaving 50g off with a new seat post.

The strap in front of my ear creates wind rush... sure you couldn't just wear them a touch tighter?

Thanks for the link to the slipstreamz. The cost of them is so small that it seems worth my while to buy a pair. I too suffer from windnoise when riding and the comments about ignoring it and it will go away are definitely not true on my case. My new helmet is quieter then previous ones, but it is still too noisy, and the noise is very distracting. I am a Bikeability trainer and I often need to listen out for instructions called out by a ride leader; windnoise drowns out the things I need to hear in other circumstances too, sometimes vehicles approaching from the rear cannot be heard and for me that's a major safety issue.

  • Sounds (!) more like a strap issue than a head-covering foam issue. The strap could be twisting And catching the wind.
All the gear, but no idea...

    Try wearing earplugs?
