Who makes the Specialized Hi-Lo rear hub?

Specialized Camber 2011 with Hi-Lo rear hub. It has two sealed bearings in it and a freewheel assembly in the middle. I've totally munched it now - freewheel is wobbly and the ratchet is wrecked.

I did some google searching and there were several claims that it was a debadged DT Swiss hub, but some other's said it was made by Commencal (or some other French sounding name?).

Does anyone know for sure who makes it?
Is it worth fixing? Seems a real waste of a wheel that's only 6 months old.

It's probably Joy-Tech, or their fancier arm Novatec. I'm pretty sure it's just the Roval wheels that have DT hubs.
  • The front hub says "Stubby" or something like that on it.

They say that Formula make it.

These guys say Formula or Joytech

I said Commencal, but a look at one and it's nothing like mine.

    Right you are.
I think it is a Commencal hub.
A 12mm Allen key fits the nut inside the hub as per the earlier post.

Funnily enough I've just got my bike out of the garage, exactly the same bike and year and my freewheel is grinding like a mother. I'ts just tipped outside its warranty typically but it's only really done one trail centre and my local woods so can't see how it's gone already.
Does anyone know if this is a problem with them?
  • I have a month old Stumpy FSR Comp that has just developed this problem after 250 miles ! From reading on other forums it appears this is a fairly major problem with people having suffered 3 and 4 failed units.

The rear HiLo freehub problem is mainly due to poor lubing of the bearings from the factory. Oil won't do it, you need good heavy grease for it. But you cannot lube it from the ends as the grease won't get everywhere you need it.

I fixed mine drilling a 1mm hole in the freewheel and injecting grease there until it came out both ends. Then sealed the hole with surf wax. It has been working fine (super silent) for 8 months already. No problems at all.

I do have a new spare freehub that I got from Specialized to replace mine. But since I lubed the old one I didn't have to replace it. If you are interested in it, PM me with an offer.
