Bassically doing a run and need a head torch.

my plan was going to try using a magicshine style light stuck to backpack but now found that it wont work so instead going to stick a torch to my head using a strap

Going to buy from DX as used thembefore and generally quite good.

But looking at torches there seems to be many many varients around, need a good beam, and wide.(will carry spare batts in back)
liked my T6 XML magicshine style light but maybe a little too spotty.

with this in mind looking at getting a Ultrafire but which one?
UltraFire TH-T60 HA-II XM-LT6
UltraFire KH-T60 HA-II XM-LT6
UltraFire NH-T60 HA-II XM-LT6
UltraFire WF-501B XM-LT6

To name a few...have no idea about the T/K/N and what that means exactly.
Charger wise :OEM 2*18650 Lithium Battery Charger
Batterys :TrustFire Protected 18650 Lithium Battery

thanks for reading and help:)

  • As all of them use XM-L T6 led's the only difference will be the amount of current they draw and the size of the reflector/head.

As buying cheap lights is a bit of a lottery you will not know exactly how much current each will draw until you actually own it then the only difference is going to be the size of the reflector.

In simple terms the smaller the head the wider the flood will be and the larger the head the more spotty it will be.

Simply put buy the one with the smallest head if you want the widest beam but be prepared to use it on lower power because the smaller the head the hotter it will get.

T/K/N just means different models with similar bodies e.g. stainless bezel, plain bezel, grey body. Definately no extra light or wider beam.
  • k but looking on their site the TKN specs all look the exact same, it doesnt say they are differant from what i can see.

ofc heat is a issue as il be running with it, so dont want something that going to burn up.

    I seen one of these

but looking at the specs its hard to see is it would throw the beam out enough compared to the normal style torch

  • +1 for the P7 especially in a smaller headed torch, downside is P7 draws more current and gets hotter.

Q5 led's have a narrower beam and less overall light. So good for throw but rubbish for flood. To be honest unless you are running at over 40mph you really need flood not throw (or spot as you put it).

An XM-L T6 running at about 1.0-1.5 Amps should be fine for both heat management and light output, so the WF-501b on mid-mode should be perfect. Even better if you can get it with an orange peel reflector although it doesn't make a great deal of difference.
  • thanks for the advice night porter, been looking on dx and been unable to find the light you recommended, all i can find is the normal 501b

this hasnt got the orange peel but it will be floody enough right?
(i have seen a WF-504B, not sure if that a better model?)
ofc keeping weight down is allways helpfull too:)

  • If you are lucky enough to get one of those with a genuine "Digital Regulated 1400mA Current Output" then that would be perfect on high.

It looks like the only way you would get an OP reflector is to buy one seperate and install it but as I said it will make very little difference so don't bother. You could smear a little vaseline on the inside of the lens to give the same light dispersal effect and it will probably do the same thing.

The 504 is a more solidly built torch than the 501 but the pay off is it is slighly heavier. Remember the "drop-in" is what gives the light and they are likely to be exactly the same. So why carry the extra weight if you don't need to?

thanks for the advice Night porter, i think il buy the light i linked to above "UltraFire WF-501B XM-LT6 5-Mode 510-Lumen Memory White LED Flashlight with Strap (1*18650)"

Out of interest would buying a better quality battery rather than the typical TrustFire Protected 18650 Lithium Batterys make any differance or not worth the extra cost?

As far as the light forums say Xtar 2600 batteries are supposed to be some of the best but I have used Trustfire protected and unprotected for the last 3 years without any issues. I also have half a dozen rescued from a laptop battery and they work fine too. But I do use my lights almost daily so maybe some people have problems that are caused by the way they store them during periods of no use?

Battery University website says life can be prolonged by storing at 3.75v I think??? So maybe storing them at 4.20v does the opposite and reduces battery life.

Their European Warehouse is in Portsmouth so as long as the item you are ordering says it is there then less than a week is normal. If it is in China then normal delivery times are about a month (if you are lucky).
