Different quoted weights for the same product rant !

Im on the lookout for a nice clean titanium rails selle san marco rolls saddle to replace the steel railed one I currently own. The Rolls is the best saddle Ive used bar none, but the steel railed one weighs 370g. I was checking the weight saving offerred by using a titanium rails version and dammit, one source says 270g, another 290g, another 304g and another 310g. I refuse to believe that manufacturing tolerance can be this wide and varied and am none the wiser as to what the actual weight saving would be by swapping a steel rolls out for a titanium one .

Stick a 270g one on your bike then a 310g one. You will notice zero difference whatsoever. Hence, just buy the freaking saddle.

  • in overall bike weight terms, you reckon the titanium will be noticable or negligible ?

Im giving my bike to a guy on sunday to swap out :

    Sora brakes front and rear
    Tiagra compact chainset
    FSA front deraillure
    Tiagra Rear Deraillure

    for

    105 brakes front and rear
    105 compact chainset
    105 front and rear deraillures

I wonder in conjunction with the groupset changes, if I swapped the steel rolls for titanium also, would i gain noticeable reduction in bike weight. Im also considering trying the carbon clinchers you can buy from dengfu or carbonzone in china as Ive read nothing but good words about them and I know they would have a big impact in terms of bike weight.

out of that lot only the chainsets a lot lighter...even tho you wont notice it.
I've got Titanium, carbon and alloy railed SLR saddles and TBH there no difference....carbon rails do look ultra cool tho and shock obsorbsion is very good..... :D
wheels will make the biggest "noticeable" difference tho. Not tried those carbonezone ones but by gosh they look superb value...if they can be trusted ?!

My only concern with the carbonzone clinchers is that id like the braking surface to be alloy, not carbon. From research I have done, Ive not come across a bad comment and they appear to offer sensational value for money. Talk about giant killers, the claimed weight for their asking price is just astonishing.

I did a long 21 and 2nd place in a open 10 on a titanium railed saddle. I would have won it if a rail hadn't broke just before the start.. . I think very light rails but not as resilient as steel.

100g is nothing. That's 100ml less in your water bottle (or your belly if you've drunk it all :D). My Topeak Multi-19 tool weighs 170g...is there any difference when I forget to take it out? Certainly none that can be attributed to minuscule weight loss. Hell, my own body weight fluctuates lots more than a few hundred grams depending what/when I've eaten and drunk and relieved myself!

Get the heavier one but remember to 'empty your tanks' before riding to make up for the weight difference. A few CC of bodily fluids should cover it.

No way will you ever notice 100g in any way whatsoever...

However, you may just about notice a kilogram, if you are skinny to begin with and timing yourself over long climbs. Or if you like picking your bike up and being pleased at how light it is... To save a kilo, you need to save lots of 50g and 100g. So saving 100g can be part of a rational strategy to save a just-noticeable-amount of weight, if that's your thing...

You might not notice the difference now but if you have a plan to change other parts and save 50g here and there, you'll eventually have a noticeable difference.

Who cares if you don't race? I use Super Record stuff but don't race.
    Buy what you want/can afford.
