Hi BikeRadars,

I'm a newbie here so give me some slack :D After my first proper ride this year, even though it's late, and I've been looking for events to take part in over the summer, something to help me train, meet more likeminded sorts and generally have fun.

What's the favourite events you guys have participated in, seen or just heard about, I'd love some help making some choices this year and keep the pedals cranking.

Thanks for any help!

Hi you might like the sxc Scottish Cross Country race series although the competition gets pretty serious at the top end. There is the Chain Reaction Selkirk event in May and the Tweedlove festival in June. All can be found on Google :)
  • The SXC is good! Great courses and very well run. As is the Tour of Ben Nevis but it's a big one, 70 odd kilometres and a lot of climbing. But a great wilderness feel and can feel like more of an event than a race. The Strathpuffer is legendary but bugger me is it hard! 24 hours in the depth of winter but well worth doing. 10 Under the Ben is another great event!

We are spoilt for choice really :)

Thanks very much, who knows, maybe I'll get bitten by the race bug!

Glentress 7 was superb last year- far better course than 10UTB, and not so oversubscribed either. It's in 2 weeks though so might be a bit close for you

(you might think it'll just be on GT trails but though some of it is- mainly the climbs- the main descent is all off-map)

  • I'm signed up for the GT7 in two weeks, and also the King and Queen of the Hill event next week.

Slightly terrified as these are both my first races and I feel very unfit and inexperienced. I'm thinking I will probably pass out at some point :)

If they go well though, I am very interested in other events in the area!

Blazinmonga... I'm doing the event announcing for POC King & Queen of the Hill. To get an idea for how a newbie is feeling about the event it would be good to interview you at the start/finish before you start and once you've finished.

Hunt me out. I'm Alan, I'll be the rolf harris look a like with the microphone.
  • Hi Alan,

If you want to interview me then that would be awesome. My main objective is to finish the event in one piece, so if I am still alive at the end then I will seek you out. I suspect I may be the newbie-ist person there. I'm going with my mate Spike, and it is also his first race, but he has no fear so I think he will be fine. I'm bricking it!

PS: My real name is David Thomson and I am riding a white Lapierre Spicy 316 with far too many red bits on it.

Also worth considering the Strathpuffer Lite on the 7/8th June - same course as the 24, but only 12 hours overnight (8pm - 8 am) and in 'summer'

Rik at Drumlanrig is putting something on in July, not much info that I've seen but there's something here:

At the other end of the scale there's always the best race in the UK, the No Fuss Endurance Downhill at fort william... Not for everyone obviously but it is superb, maybe the best day on a bike i've ever had.
