Road SPD's vs MTB/Touring SPD'd

Hi all,

I've just got my first road bike (Planet X Pro Carbon Rival) after riding XC for a couple of years. I've been using the Shimano M540 SPD pedals on my MTB and I'm happy with them and have fitted them temporarily on my road bike until my A520's arrive but what I've never noticed before on the MTB until the few rides I've been on with these pedals is how much my foot can move side to side making it possible for me to hit my feet on the chain stay as I pedal.

The problem is the reason why I wanted pedals like the A520 is that last year I did a Euro tour on the XC bike with slicks on and am planning to do the same on the Road bike. The recessed cleats in the MTB style shoes allow for easily walking around when not riding.

Is there a way around this? Can the pedals simply be tightened to stop the movement?

I'm open to any suggestions

Cheers

Jimbo

I think most mtb pedals/cleats allow for more float, they also wear and the bindings in the pedal itself can wear (usually takes a long time).

you may not have noticed this movement on the mtb due to the different geometry.

you may need, new cleats and or pedals,

move the cleats on the shoe to give more offset to the outside

    pedals/crank with greater 'Q' factor

    pedal extenders

I have a similar problem with my right heel just catching the chainstay. a slightly thicker washer on the pedal has improved this.
