Weird pain.. Any ideas?

Two days ago, while doing intervals on the turbo, after about 20~30 minutes I started feeling some serious pain near the down-left side of my hip bone, around the area where it connects with the left leg I believe. I don't know what it is that's hurting, but if you place your hand in that area and move your leg, the area near the bone you feel is the spot that started hurting. I had to stop pedaling and it kept hurting while walking the rest of the day so I didn't touch the bike yesterday to give it some rest.

It didn't hurt anymore yesterday/today, so I went for a ride today. It didn't hurt at all for a while, but after about 20~30 minutes, the pain came back and I had to shorten the ride. This is really annoying as I haven't changed anything on the bike setup lately, it only happens on the left leg and I never had this problem. The only thing I changed recently (a week ago) were my shorts (from some cheap shorts to assos).

Does anyone have any idea of what's going on/how to fix this? I wanted to search around the internet for similar problems but I don't even know the name of the bone or whatever that's hurting so it's not easy.

Any help appreciated.

Hip problems often suggest that your saddle's too high. It causes you to rock from side to side as you reach TDC for each crank.

Try pedalling with one foot (take the pedal off the other side or just unclip). If the crank is pulling your foot through the bottom of the stroke then your saddle's probably too high. Adrian Timmis taught me that one the other week.

  • You should see a Physio if it isn't gone in a week.

Sounds like you are talking about the area just below the Greater Trochanter - there is a bursa there which if inflammed can be painful.

Illio Tibial Band runs there as well and can often be implicated in pain when cycling.

PS - Can't vouch for any exercise/treatment advise on these sites just the first I found to show the location and ideas of what may be the problem.

I thought about that at first, but the last time I raised the saddle was thousands of miles ago and I never had any problems.. Then again, the new shorts have way more padding than the ones I had. Do you think the extra padding would make a noticeable difference in height? I didn't think of that but maybe the shorts require me to lower the saddle just a little bit. I'll try that tomorrow, thanks.

Thanks for the link, that definitely looks like the spot. I just don't know if it's the bone or a muscle/tendon near it. I'll read about that and see if anything helps.
  • Very, very, very unlikely to be the bone -- it will be the tendon ( enthesitis), trochanteric bursitis or ITB that's at the root of it I bet. Any physio worth their salt will know in 20 mins max and will treat it - best of luck :)

I'd just like to say I lowered the saddle by about 0.5cm, did the recommended stretches, used a lot of ice and didn't ride more than 50kms each day (keeping an easy pace) and just got home from a 150kms ride today with absolutely no pain! I don't know if the problem was the padding height on the new shorts or not, but I'm glad it's gone.

    Thanks everyone.
