Hi,

I have been hankering over a new set of wheels recently after putting on a new set of Nobby Nics with the white lines on a realising how untrue my current set are!

I'm completely confused with the range of options available and the amount of money I should be spending  therefore I am turning to you esteemed folks for some advice...

I ride trail centres and the lakes - not massive stuff due to onset of a reduction in the capacity of my b*llocks with 40 approaching and young kids  however I don't want something that would restrict me should I rediscover some of my teenage chutzpah!

The wheels that I have seen so far are:

http://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/1072142/

I dont really want to go over £200 and they have to be QR both front and back...

Cheers

Have a look on Superstars website. Depending on your type of riding you can use the wheel configurator to build the wheels you want. They are slightly over £200 for most sets but not much in most cases.
Also looking at other threads seems to be that they are good wheels!

    or the custom configurator :D

If you have to buy new, then have a look at superstar components.

But if you dont mind going 2nd hand, I'd have a look for an old favourite - Hope XC hubs on Mavic 717 rims. You can often find them cheap since most people tend to be using 15/20mm axles now. £120 should get you a nice set.

Superstar AMX for £130 absoulte bargain, I have the DHX on my DJ bike and they are fantastic for the money.

    http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_ ... cts_id=535

Select QR adaptor 9mm Front and 10mm through axle adaptor rear

    then buy,
    (top 2 items on page)
    http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/index.php?cPath=32
    10mm Rear QR Through Axle
    9mm Front QR Through Axle

So for a £145.98 you get great wheels and 2 new quick releases that will be far stiffer than your current ones.

  • Thanks - more options! although these seem a lot better than what I was considering - 1mancity2 how do you reckon the AMX would compare with the http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_ ... cts_id=347 - is it worth the extra £30?

styxd - I have no problem going with second had - everything else on the bike is - but cant find these for sale anywhere!

  • oh - and apologies for complete lack of knowledge, but will the 9mm and 10mm QR through Axle fit in the normal QR dropouts? I assume yes, but I have been known to buy things that dont fit before.....

Why not have a go at truing up what you have? What wheels are they?

Plus are you sure it is not just the tyre making them look untrue?

I bet it's the tyre lines that are untrue :D Remove the tires and spin the rims only to see if they run true or not... :)

  • Its a Mavic 317 rim both front and back..

I could have a go at truing them, but you know when you get that shiny new thing notion.....

I checked the rims and there is a definite wobble in them (thats the technical term apparently!)

They are not bad rims - I'd certainly get a shop to have look. Depending on the hubs, a £150 wheelset might be a downgrade!

This is true, and a truing should only cost you a £10 a wheel.

  • The hubs are formula which were stock on the original Giant - I dont think they are great...

Do you think I would be better of getting them trued and rebuilt with better hubs (to satisfy my need for a new shiny thing)? My LBS in Hexham is brilliant and very reasonable.

In which case, the thread changes to which hubs!

    Thanks supersonic

Yeah they are worth the extra £30, wider rim so you can fit larger tyres, and yes the 9mm and 10mm will fit your standard dropouts.

I would either get them trued, or buy a new set - rebuilds often cost a lot more than you think! It needs to be unbuilt, new spokes, then the cost of the hub, then the build.

I'd get them trued anyway, even if you want a new set of wheels - then you can at least sell them for a better price.

If buying new, to get something that is a genuine upgrade, I'd look at the £220 Superstar wheelsets.

New hubs, if your going down the road of rebuilding I would defo get the superstar wheels instead. (probably cost less than a rebuild)

  • Cool - I'll take them to the shop and get them to look at them for me....

Wait a minute.....are you sure one of you isn't my wife in disguise! I've gone from a £200 budget on wheels to a £20 for truing.... £180 goes a long way in Monsoon..

If you do go back to your original plan don't forget to order the actual 9 & 10mm QR through axles too. Ordered a wheel a couple of weeks ago and forgot. An extra £2.50 and a weeks wait (delivery to France) before I could fit my new shiny thing

  • AAAHHH! Just received this in an e-mail

    http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/WPSRRHYNODE ... dium=email

Are these better than the Mavic 317's with Formula hubs?! Looks too good to be true, is it?

    Help!

Not really - probably heavier, same sort of hub.

Good value for what they are, but no upgrade.
  • Cool - thanks

If you want shimano wheels, these are probably a good bet:
    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=81071

If not, +1 for a superstar build. Not convinced by the 9/10mm axles though-dont think they improve stiffness much, are heavy and quite a few people have had issues with the narrow thread holding the lever to the axle stripping and the wheel coming out.
  • Alright, so on closer inspection (actually looking rather than assuming...) the rims I currently have are the Mavic 117, not the 317 - how much of a difference does this make?

http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_ ... cts_id=496 these caught my eye - which adaptor would I need for the rear given that I have QR dropouts?

Ultimately I aim to replace the Trance 3 frame with something better and would like the components to be worth reusing on the new build (end of 2013 hopefully!) which is what is pushing me...that and the new shiny thing desire...

Promise I'll stop faffing soon - thanks for all the help so far
