Not sure how the rear shock would stand up to heavy wet claggy mud, but time will tell - unusual design for sure :D

I just got a (very quick, around 45 mins) reply about the rear shock from Merida that you and others may be interested in; my questions in black, his answers in red. :)
    Dear MTB-Rich,

thanks a lot for you choice :) Here under I will try to answer your questions:

    Dear Sirs,

I have just purchased a Merida Juliet 1000-D for me and my girlfriend to share, and i’m, interested by the positioning of the rear shock, lying low and horizontal to the rear tyre, and if at all this affects its use vs more traditional vertical rear shocks placed under the saddle. Can you please answer for me:

    1) What is the “official” category of this bike in terms of its intended area of use?

This is a bike in the range of 120mm / use = marathon/all mountain

    2) What sort of other use is this bike suitable for... is it also ok as a technical trail XC and downhill bike?

XC is very ok... DH: not if you mean really DH (like competition), but if you mean just "down in technical trails" it's very ok :)

    3) Does the positioning of the rear shock cause any limitations or things we need to be careful with?

Absolutely not! This is the LRS system that we used to have till 2010 also on our competition bikes!

If you have any other question feel free to contact us :)

    Saluti da Lugano,

    merida

So there you have it, seems the design is competition proven, which makes me feel confident. nice chap too! :)

Took it out for an extended spin yesterday... wow, it really is a pleasure to ride. The suspension is plush when its needed, and the lockout in the front and rear shocks makes it great when you just want to cruise and eat up the road. Gear changes are silky smooth with the Shimano XT system and the brakes handle progressively and really do stop you dead, though I have yet to try them in the wet and at speed.

I used black electrical tape to cover the "lady bits" and luckily it has the almost exact same matt black hue as the standard paintjob, so looks virtually invisible now it's on... you'd have to look really hard and close to tell it's there. I have some Specialised BG Contour Targa Grip/Bar End grips arriving next week, as well as a black Charge Spoon. I'll post some updated photos when I have it all kitted out. This could well be one of the best purchase I ever made, I absolutely love it. :)

Looks good. Mind you I ride a pink S/S to work - I have had a few school boys shout things at me but it was also a bargain! However no one will know in this case (except us...you big girl).

I now have a black Charge Spoon on it, and have replaced the stock grips for Specialzed Contour Grips with Targa Bar Ends. Bike looks about 10x better, and 100x less girly. Will do some new pics at the weekend. :D
