My rear mech was a shimano altus but have found out it was made from cheese due to it bending. The question is can i run an alternative on shimano altus 7 speed shifter. Also i have a 7 speed casette, thanks in advance

Yes any shimano rear mech. (not 10spd) but as you spend more thy just get lighter and not always stronger. Altus is now not that bad and is now labeled as 9spd IIRC?

Conventional sits in high gear (small cog) at rest, rapid rise sits in low gear at rest. Shimano don't make them any more, so only older ones for sale, and normally cheap.
An Altus or Acera will do as well as anything else.

Nope SLX will be conventional, which is probably what you want.
