Best current Garmin 800 price?

Pay day looms and I'm after a Garmin 800 with European Maps. Want to start doing random long solo rides and fed up with stopping to check the iPhone and carrying additional power for it. It's a big splash out so you'll have to excuse me for starting its own thread!

So far best price and in stock is actually Halfords! [£359.99]

Any offers or vouchers lurking that Google isn't throwing up? My usual suspects; Wiggle, CRC or Merlin can't compete!

    How does £335.88 sound?

I bought my Dakota 20 and our Nuvi car sat-nav from Handtec - they seem to be consistently good value and deliver promptly.

I'd echo the good prices and service from Handtec, not currently in stock though.

Got Evans to price match Handtec a while ago. They weren't happy giving me £70 off of list price!

Buy the basic version from Handtec and use the free openstreetmaps.
    Save £100

Or buy from Amazon and save £80

Thanks freezing77, so are the OS just as good, deffo worth considering but the saving is about 20-30 quid, not 100.

Annoying as Evans have a list of websites you can price match now, no handtec!

Amazon price is £270 your price from Halfords £360!!

I would rate the Open street maps as better than the UK Ordnance survey 1:50K series, as they suffer from pixellation at high zoom levels and at least on a par with the city navigator europe maps, they are more detailed than both.

Well, that is comparing unit only with HRM, Cadence and Maps! but you make a valid point, thats a big price difference and looking at my running HRM it is ANT+ and not sure I'm bothered about cadence and can get one for 30quid in the future.

I'm weary of Amazon as stuff isn't often sold by them but this looks pretty legit..

Amazon will match. They don't like it and you have to shop around, but if you get lucky you can. Just say your friend did (true story - read above). I do the same. CycleSurgery may pricematch too

Thanks, thats really really useful to see!

Now, 270 from Amazon or 294 from wiggle. I've had little experience with Amazon but wiggle have always been exceptional at returning goods for various reasons. Suspect I could get one in store from Evans with price match for extra reassurance.

Plus the OSM data will get better. It's gone from virtually no coverage 5 years ago to the level of detail you see there.

I'd just buy it from Amazon. Whenever I've needed to return stuff they've been exceptional.

I'm a bit (a lot) technologically-challenged: How do you install Openstreetmap onto a Garmin? (I currently have the 705)???

Reading thegarmin forums would indicate that openstreetmap works with the 705 why do you think it won't?

Bought mine about 5 weeks ago, and although Evans wouldn't price match Handtec they did let me have it for £360.

  • i made a quick video tutorial showing how to install a free OSM map to a garmin edge 800.
    Watch it here:
    http://www.scarletfire.co.uk/2012/01/tu ... -edge-800/

There's also many posts showing comparisons between OSM / OS Discoverer and City Navigator mapping, such as this one:

    Hope it's useful.

Thanks should be really useful for when it arrives next week and as its rank outside have plotted a few routes!

Anyone use a power monkey or similar for super long rides?
