Briefly got onto the subject in the wrong forum so thought it was best to start in here all advice is welcome. May help, may hinder let's see.
Let's start with the bikes I like the look of and have got my atention in mag reviews:
Orange 5, Lapierre Zesty, Norco Sight, Santa Cruz Nickel/Butcher/Blur/Nomad.
Now my riding is most of the time local singletrack in the South Wolds, East Yorkshire(my back yard) and trail centres which are pretty much the same kind of terrain, and the peaks and moors. But I do want a bike that can cut it doing mega avalanche style races something I will be doing in the future as well as events like the whinlatter challenge.
As does every one a easy climber, out of my riding group I have not been beaten to the top of a hill and want to keep it that way and they say my bike is the reason. I have a fetish for carbon fibre so bear that in mind as well.
I have always dreamed of doing a self build, I am a sod for quality brands thou, Oakley sunglass's, VW van/camper, Sony TV etc, so self build could be costly. My current funds are nearly £3000 (nearly 4 years saving up) but if I wait till this time next year cos things are on the up for me now finally could be more like £4500.
Just after some random opinions really see what everyone thinks about above the bikes and if self builds are as awarding as I think they will be by getting exactly want you want on a bike.
Looking forward to the response.

no idea about the bikes, I like my marin mv 5.8, but are still riding the jw2? i had one for a few years and had to keep getting the spherical bearing replaced.... every few WEEKS! i had the wishbone link back one day, went for a ride at afan and it broke inside 3km.
After the 6th or 7th replacement in a year, i had a new mv frame and fork from ATB.--

I say none of the above. For just over 3k you could build an Intense Carbine or Pivot Carbon 5.7 with Revelations, Full XT and a smattering of decent finishing kit. You'd probably have to ease off on pimp wheels for a while but other than that it would be a great spec and top notch ride. That would be my choice over the ones you have listed.A Flock of Birds

The carbine is very similar to the blur, and the Pivot is worth considering for its weight and pedalling capability. The reason I struggle to upgrade the blur is because its £2000 to get a moderate improvement - not like buying a new one!A Flock of Birds

I've just built a Pivot 5.7 carbon and it's a brilliant bike. I think you would be hard pushed to build it properly for £3k. An xt groups set is going to cost £550 from Merlin. Which doesn't level too much left over for wheels, bars, stem, tyres, seat post, saddle, peddals and grips.0
-
Yeah, its a bit over 3k like I said, but not much in the grand scheme of things!
Frame £1800 (never pay full price!)
Forks £350 Rs Revelation RLT
XT Groupo £340
XT Brakes £145 inc SS rotors
Wheels £200 (rovals/Superstar etc)
Bar and Stem £100
Reverb £200
saddle £20
Tyres £50
Misc bits and bobs £45
Headset £50
Total Cost £3300.A Flock of Birds

If there is a bike you can "borrow" bits from and then replace over time that would be a good way to go.
The Revelation forks are brilliant. I run them on both of my mountain bikes.
I've got hope X2 brakes on mine but I would be really tempted with the XT ones if I was buying now.0 -
Would of gone hope brakes I think, but a fox shock. Still trying to learn whats the best to get. XT bits is something I know now is a must always had shimano since my lycra days so done a bit of research on best mtb derailers, my current bike has slx deore but very old and tired so would not swap over. Getting a new bike so dont waste any more on my whyte, a lot of bearing purchase's for the front end and ebay bought shocks all getting tired.
Is a reverb the drop style seat post and is that a must Ben, also do bike shops like a haggle to get the price down on frame?Whyte JW2

personally i would not touch lapierre or orange 5 as both have been known to snap/crack in prev years and the laps seem to bb issues,, (shame though cause i really like the look of the lapierres)
i can vouch for santacruz having owned a heckler for 3 years and owning a butcher for 12 months.. the butcher is an amazing bike,, have mine set up for big mountain terrain as it's my whistler bike..
i would love the pivot mach 5.7 carbon they look awesome but there's noway i could afford one..
and canyon the spec for the money is amazing...www.bearbackbiking.com

Problem with the Fox forks is that you get not a lot of extra benefit, but a shed load of extra cost - the Revelations are a bargain nowadays. Yes you need a dropper post in my opinion. Everyone who tries one swears they'll never go back. And finlly no they dont like to haggle, but will. Usually its easier to get something thrown in mind. So in this case you could probably ask for the frame and free reverb, which is the same total cost to you, but somehow will be easier to swallow for the shop.A Flock of Birds

I didn't like the idea of Santa Cruz only having a two year warranty. Pivot, Ibis, etc.. come with a 3 year.0 -
Warranties are not a selling point for me. It's about quality, the ride and style.Whyte JW2

Oh, and one more thing... the Pivot 5.7 (note no carbon) comes in whiteA Flock of Birds

Oh ben how we love to disagree. First it could be painted like the intense carbine and second there is coloured carbon weave red, blue, green(Kevlar) and White, fair do's it is not pure colours said it is weaved with the black stuff. One of my latest hobbies is carbon fibre resin infusion moulding, making rc boathulls and rc parts for my collection of vehicles. Skinned my last car bonnet as well. Next project idea is bike related, carbon fibre copy of my rear crud catcher, not cheap and the bike is my focus so will have to wait for that one.Whyte JW2

The new bike might at little sooner than I think. Went for a ride and down one of the local downhill runs my quad link front suspension decided to part company with the frame of the bike, the lower link bolt sheared off and face planted me into the muck, good job we have had all this rain ground was squishy, still hurt thou.Whyte JW2

you were doing a downhill run on the jw2?
i had a pivot bolt snap on my MV, held together until I got home and then bits fell off.
I like my MV, a good all-rounder, but not for downhill, but then I don't do gnarly stuff regardless of what bike i was on.--
Burls Ti Tourer for Tarmac, Saracen aluminium full suss for trails0 -
Yes downhill on JW2 but the South Wolds are not that gnarly, but this is why i'm after a better bike that can take my abuse at trail centres, peaks and future plans to do mega style races's. My JW2 has done a lot of stuff it should not of done, rattling my bones to bits in the process, has held up just, over the years. I got it home with an allen key acting as a bolt, road only thou.
Done research on nukeproof AM to many pics of cracks, it's a big NO on that one, no feed back needed.
Santa Cruz Butcher, Intense Carbine, Pivot Mach 5.7 carbon and still the Orange 5 have made my short list slightly different to the first one, can thank Ben for that.Whyte JW2
