Okay, shortly due a new steed via the 'bike to work scheme' and was wondering which one of these to go for? I know there might be better spec, cheaper deals out there but we're limited to what shop we can use and got a Specialized Hardrock DISC last year, but despite being 6'4" the frame I got (a 23") was and still is waaaaaaaaaay to large and heavy :x Ideally i'd love a Boardman but our scheme doesn't use them and the Halfords customer service is beyond dire!

After riding a fair few trails and using various and fixing with/dabbling equipment I'm much more experienced/informed now and know the danger of buying a cheaper model in a good name, you're just paying for the name and that's the feeling I get with the Lapierre, but the Orange (despite not being made in the UK) appears to be well spec'd.

Lapierre 'X-Control 110' full suspension (2012)

I'll be honest, kinda got my heart set on the orange but any thoughts? (much appreciated)

discuss...

That particular shop seems to be a rip off - has come up before. Both seem very expensive for the spec.
And isn't the scheme limited to £1000?

  • Oh well, despite some great advice :x and more concern over tax rules... going for the Orange, great ride, decent spec and significantly cheaper than the Lapierre.

The advice that they are both averagely specced for the money was correct. If I had to have either I would have bought the Orange as it's cheaper.

And although I'm no tax expert, the C2W scheme is no longer VAT exempt. I fail to see even with a VAT exemption you could ever save 50% off the value of the bike, which is what you're suggesting.

Hope you enjoy the bike though, and aren't too upset about having to pay more than you're hoping! ;)
  • THANKS! EH_Rob, yea the Orange looks (and on paper) sounds pretty sweet I thought, regarding the financials we're well into the new tax year and I've had the quotes in writing from the store and HR, and even if they are slightly out, better than RRP full price ey! it's only a circa £350 saving but nice all the same!!!

Yea, the Orange is their lowest priced/spec model and not built by hand in Halifax but even the cheapest Orange is better than any Specialized under £1k ;)

Built by hand by a weird man in Yorkshire doesn't do anything for me. I'm from Huddersfield, so have a good idea where his hands have probably been, and chances are he won't have washed them.

The main thing is you enjoy your new bike! And if you save as much money as you think you'll have some to upgrade bits when you feel like.

There's no way you'll pay £381.06 for the Orange. The RRP on that site is £729.99 which is more or less what you now end up paying back . This article here explains the changes. http://croydoncyclist.wordpress.com/201 ... rk-scheme/
  • Grrrrrrr Ry.... can we quit the f**king tax talk please, go here http://cyclesolutions-shop.co.uk/catalo ... MakeID=617 the window where the Orange bike is located to the left of the orange coloured 'more' button, use the calculator... do you see?

Lol, and by the way I can give him s*it, he's a mate ;)

Anyway, if I don't get that 2nd hand Boardman Ry I've been SOLD on the http://cyclesolutions-shop.co.uk/p48063 ... -2012.aspx

People are just giving you a heads up mate - is a forum, people try to help. The site IS wrong, has not taken new VAT rules into account, nor the final value fee.

Did you take a look at the Genesis bikes I linked to?

Agree. New tax rules this year. Use evans calculator it is accurate.

But anyway it doesn't matter what you pay or won't pay. As long as you get some savings or any savings is a good thing.
  • hsiaolc, true... any savings that are made is great and like most ppl the mo' who has £100's/£1,000 to spend at once, the spread payments are the best bit and yea funny enough a mate also recommended Genesis bikes, love the CORE 26.2, and like the Ragleys, made by bikers FOR bikers and not your 'norm' run of the mill well known name! good components, haven't seen a bad review for ANY Genesis and cheaper than the Orange... SOLD! ;)
