I've got a pair of Shimano R87 shoes that I'm fitting Look Quartz 2 bolt cleats to, the Shimano installation diagram shows a larger plate with sides that goes between the shoe and the cleat. I imagine this is to protect the cleat and give a more stable interface with the pedal. Anyone know what this part is called?
I've tried the shoes without it and the connection to the pedal has a lot of movement and isn't very stable.

I could be wrong, but I think that bit is only to protect the cleat.
    More problems but still living....
