Commuter N+1

Amazingly the Mrs has have given a tentative yes to an addition to the fleet!
I have a very specific idea of what I need for the year round commuting duties but wondered if anyone has any suggestions. Ideally drop bars, disc brakes, rack mounts, space for full guards.. all the usual stuff.
I also like the idea of a steel frame and because of that I can only see 2 options,
Genesis Croix de fer or On One Kaffenback.
Any other suggestions people or is that my lot??
Forgot to mention, 35mile round trip!

The Genesis Croix De Fer is a great bike; have you considered a hub geared bike for the commute?
I was in a similar position after my long term commuter was stolen and went for the Genesis Day 01, the hub gear was a bit of a gamble but it's been rock solid for 2K+ miles since November.Marmalade0 -
oh, the charge look nice.
Padders.. I had thought about the hub gears but look to add a fair chunk to the price.
I have just spotted some alfine hubs going cheap so could grab one and a frame and pick up bits as I find them otherwise it will probably be cycle to work so topping out at a grand!Banstead in Surrey to Russell square and back

Lucky man, i'd go the Genesis, followed by the Charge Hi. Wider gearing on the Genesis edges it for me, but i'd get some slimmer tyres asap0

Not steel, but the Boardman CX?
BTW, were you stopped on Cheyne Walk the other day?FCN 2-4.

"It stays down, Daddy."
"Exactly."0 -
was on cheyne walk/battersea bridge tonight for the first time in a while but if not tonight then not me!
I had thought about the boardman, begrudge giving halfords the custom!
Spoke to Pearsons and they will be doing something which sounds promising but they reckon its going to start from 1300 quid up. As much as I would rather stay away from halfords or evans when the difference in price between similar kitted out bikes is so much it really doesnt give you much choice!Banstead in Surrey to Russell square and back
