Fork Upgrade for stock Hardrock 2012

Hiya.
First of all I know how terrible the fork is on the Hardrock complete so please - as little "any fork will be an upgrade" replies as possible
The current Suntour XCM thing has 80mm travel - will I get away with 100mm? How badly will it effect the headangle?
What sort of money do I have to spend to make it "worthwhile" - as in, theres little point spending say 200 if its still going to be a mediocre fork, but for 250 I can get something awesome.
Are the lower end Rock Shox any good? I've seen a few Recon Gold solo airs around - they look ideal, nice and light etc but a brisk £300 odd quid - I don't mind paying that if it's my only option but if there is a semi decent fork with a decent weight to performance ratio for £250...
Any help greatly appreciated, new to MTB - so take a while to get my head around things.
Cheers!

100mm is fine ime. Head angle, didn't notice any difference personally with my bombers.
Recon silver seems a popular choice for the hardrock.0 -
2011 Reba's are £250 on One One at the moment...0

yeah I saw those earlier - anyone know if the V brake hardware is removable? I'd buy them literally now if it is - I REALLY don't like the look of them with the V brake mounts just sat thereDub L wrote:2011 Reba's are £250 on One One at the moment...
That seems a good price, I will have a peek if the above Recon Gold's don't work out!0 -
Yes, you can unscrew the brake studs. But the bit they screw into will still be there. By far and away the best fork for this money. Do it!0

The 179 pricepoint is very tempting thats for sure!0

Ooops, I meant the Reba! At £250 is a superb buy. Worth the extra over the Recon Gold TK.0

that was going to be my next question, for £70 more is it just easier to go for the reba..... buy cheap buy twice afterall!0 -
It's not really cheap. They are both good, just the Reba is more than £70 better as it's lighter and more tunable.0

I love my recon gold - incredible improvement over my suntour fork! Just spend what you can afford, neither is bad but the reba is worth the extra - not sure if I would've noticed the difference between the reba and the recon gold though as the difference is just so much compared to the XCM!0
