I wonder if the scratch on the road is from the folded rim - suggesting the car reversed over the wheel while someone was holding the bike upright.

No, this is what happens when a car crashes into the rear at a slower speed (perhaps the movistar rider suddenly braked to let the car out from the left). The wheel simple buckles and folds. The scratch is from the chain ring. It's a write off....
  • I don't think the wheel has folded at all. Look carefully. I think he braked so hard and for long enough, he just wore the tyre and then the rim completely away!

I reckon they could do with more spokes on those wheels though. ;-)

Just take the wheel out, attach some legs to it and you have a funky cycling related chair to sit on.

Reminds me of Cav's crash at the Tour de Switzerland... weird!

I had one of them red bikes but I don't any more. Sad face.

Ive seen this very incident twice before in my life ... its a low speed rear-ending by the car. Rider probably stopped suddenly and the car gently hit the wheel... I think this was said above...

He clearly ignored the road work sign "No entry - be aware new surface just laid!"
