I need help on choosing my first MTB for under a £1000.
My short-list is as follows:
1. Whyte 901 (2011)
2. Diamondback Axis (2010 or 2011)
3. Cube LTD PRO.
4. Trek 6700
It will be mainly commuting to work with 75% road & 25% Trail with the option to use it at weekends on trails.
Not 100% on the 'Cube' because of 24" wheels but love the design and the 'Trek' is a last minute choice.
So ideally I would like it to be between 'Whyte' & 'Diamondback', which both have amazing spec for the price.
Would appreciate any extra knowledge on the above or anything very similar.
Thanks,

Good spec, and bounce at both ends.

And I'm sure the Cube has 26" wheels.I don't do smileys.

I would be tempted to include the Cube LTD PRO 29er but not sure if it's suitable for my use, unless the 29er is much better on the road?
@cooldad, I forgot to mention I can't shop at Halfords because they don't use cyclescheme (my works ride to work scheme).0 -
The Cube I would say was the best bet there. Has the best fork, a more XC oriented geometry which will help on the road. The Trek 6500 is better value than the 6700: the DB and Whyte are geared up for slightly harder riding - the latter having a noticably slack and slow steering (but stable) head angle.0

I am swaying more towards the 'Cube' but am I right in thinking that they only come in 24" & 29" wheel size and would a 29er be better for me on the road?0 -
i would go 29er for road. as in 700c road bikes are faster and less effort to ride the thin tyres have less drag so = less resistance on road.. if your commute has off road sections then maybe a cyclocross bike or a hybrid may be better.
i lasted 3 weeks using my mtb (hardtail) for my commute, then ended up getting a cheap road bike, it was to much effort and to slow on the mtb even with slick tyres.
i know someone who is over 6ft and 16st and has a xl whyte but his is a whyte 46 and it fits him perfect..www.bearbackbiking.com

Ronsta - the Cube is a 26" not 24...
It must be a typo on the site you are viewing.
(I'm not going to recommend one, but I will say that I was in a similar position to you 4 months ago. I have a Cube Ltd SL btw )2007 Felt Q720 (the ratbike)
2012 Cube Ltd SL (the hardtail XC 26er)
2014 Lapierre Zesty TR 329 (the full-sus 29er)0 -
Thanks guys,
I've decided to go for a Cube LTD PRO.0
