Hey Guys,

Now the weather is changing hourly I have been waring trousers out riding. However I am destroying my trousers with the chain catching them, rubbing grease and crap on them as well.

What do you guys ware? or do you have any tips for making trousers survive lol.

Thanks.

Get some bicycle clips, they will come back one day!

Lol I actually just looked them up..... Hmmm don't think so lol I would be laughed off the trail :)
  • Personally I wear shorts in all weathers. I wear knee pads most of the time though which also help with keeping warm. 3/4 length bib-shorts or even full length bib shorts are always an option though (worn under baggies though, unless you think that wearing lycra tights in public is less embarrassing than wearing bicycle clips!)

In all seriousness I wear long bibs all weathers, rain hail, sleet and snow. Get Gore windstoppers, expensive but they keep you warm in all weathers. Or just shorts in summer/spring. ie in the UK summer is anytime there is no frost.

Tights if it's very cold (with shorts on top, mainly to protect the innocent from my lycra clad butt), pair of cheap track pants over them if it's really really cold. I don't care who laughs at me, once you're covered in shite it all looks the same.
Tights can also be peeled off after a muddy ride, less crud to scrape off the legs.

I wear shorts whatever the weather is, without pads. The coldest I've done this year is -8 Celsius and it was OK as long as I was moving. Hail hitting the backs of my calves was a challenge up on the moors last week, but nothing would tempt me into long trousers on the bike again.

Endura Singletracks - wear them in all weather and never snagged or caught them on the chain. Main reason I like longer trousers is I don't fancy a nice set of shin tattoos from my V12s. The trousers have been strong enough to not even show any marks from the pins in those either

Tights with normal baggies over the top is the way forward - means everyone else is spared the lycra'd-man-bum look and (as as cooldad said) you can peel all the mud off when you get home which saves you scraping it off your legs for ages :D

Endura gridlock waterproof opvertrousers if I'm commuting. Or if I'm riding offroad, I have a pair of Endura stealth waterproof tights.
Underneath baggies, because the world cannot cope with seeing my legs in tight clothing etc etc etc yadayadayada.

This is MTB not an audax forum for old men so please don't look a twa7 on the trail with trouser clips..
    On a serious note,
Like many are saying, get some mountainbike trousers designed for the job and have no problems.
They may cost a bit but this type of kit lasts a long time generally. It tends to be well made and unless your riding every other day this stuff will last ages so go toss some coin at the issue.!

I wear ordinary chinos, jeans, jogging bottoms and combat trousers with the hems rolled up just above the ankle paratrooper-fashion.

This is for both mountain biking as well as road riding.

Mainly, to hide my spindly legs but also for protection against nettles, brambles and twigs etc. Plus, they have pockets for storage; and riding with a pitched tent (yes, this will happen to every virile man at some point) will not be as obvious when you're wearing trousers.

I only wear trousers if it's really bucketing down with rain and have gone through a few pairs in my time after shredding them on the chain ring. There are two methods that fix it for me but neither of them do much for "the look"... tuck your drive side trouser leg into your socks or wear one trouser clip job done.
  • I have been wearing my padded mtb shorts for three months. Wearing flared jeans/trousers/ball gowns is asking for trouble.

I personally always wear shorts no matter what the weather...

But just tuck the bottoms into your right sock if it's that much Of a problem... And that's a free no money solution....

Aldi do some great winter cycling pants/trousers, whatever you want to call them. They're kind of lycra(ish) jogging pants, but a lot warmer. They're not quite as tight as full-on roadie lycra and have a padded section built in. They've been brilliant when the temp is around zero. When it got down to -6C the other year I wore some thermals underneath.

The rest of the year I wear shorts and padded liners.

Never cotton though.... this just gets soggy, heavy and cold when wet.
Cool, retro and sometimes downright rude MTB and cycling themed T shirts. Just MTFU.

Can someone kindly invent an elastic band?

Elastic bands cut into your legs and snap to easily  .

Use an old tube. Cut a strip and make it about an inch longer than the circumference of your ankle. Mark the point and then use rubber solution to glue it into a band.

holds the trousers in and strong enough to not get ripped apart straight away.
