Looking for some under-shorts protection for the approaching Downhill season.

Comfort, price, protection is the sort of order I'm looking at

Will be my first season on the DH bike so crashes will mainly be over the bars and washing out on corners I reckon i.e. not 15' drop-offs going horribly wrong..will save that for next year :wink:

    so powerpants

    mainly avoid the Lycra types with pads sown in they are too sweaty under other clothes, and not a good look worn by themselves

    I have a dianese set they are made from a sort of netting, with only 3 hard plates, either thigh and a coccyx plate, they are not cheap, but work well. (as a note they have zipps down the front, which I have had sown up as I never used the zips, and they could dig in under some shorts)

    A mate has some Bomber Evos and more recently some EVS shorts but he doesn't seem too comfortable in either of them. He's had a couple of bad offs just recently and has more-or-less resigned himself to the fact he's going to crash so he's fully stormtroopered up from the start. To my mind the shorts are distracting which is not a good thing when one is trying to concentrate 100%

    He has mentioned the coccyx pad on one of them is annoying on the pedally bits.

    Got the 661 Subgear which works well and isn't too hot so maybe I should just go for the 661 Sub Shorts.

    Cheers.

    In fact these AlpineStars look like the ones for me;

    I've got a couple of pairs of Bomber Evos, impressive kit- they're no more intrusive than any other lycra short, and they offer a decent amount of protection, though the pads are in slightly odd places IMO, coverage isn't perfect. They do cheaper versions, some of which have hard protectors but are obviously more bulky and more intrusive.

    The Evos are totally suitable for riding XC and downhill in, I'd say the other ones are really just for harder use when you're not so bothered about the bulk and extra sweat because you're more likely to use the protection!

    Cheers NW. Yeah - was looking at them. Not cheap but comfort is my main aim with protection. Not into all the hard plastic stuff. Maybe I should stay with 661 as the Subgear and KS Knees I have are great bits of kit.

    You say good for XC - do they have chamois-arse-bollock-pad in them too?

    Ah, fair point- no they don't, I don't wear nappies so I forgot about that ;) The POC ones do incidentally. Not sure how well the 661 ones would go under chamois.

    hmmm, they're the £100+ jobbies aren't they? Think I'll go for the 661 Evo's for DH and keep the nappies for the XC rides. Cheers.
