New or second hand?

Hi,

Got my eye on a 2011 bike that I can get for £665 delivered, brand new from a shop with warranty.

I've seen the same bike for sale second hand but described "as new", "ridden twice" etc and the guy has said he wants no less than £500 for it.

I'd have to get a train costing about £15 to go and pick it up so I'd be looking at about a £150 saving.

Worth it?

Or just buy new?

What would you do?

Thanks.

Spend the £665 on a 'better' second hand bike

Argh one of those. They are best kept, so will be in perfect condition.

I want to keep it under wraps for the mean time in case a ruthless forumite tries to steal my deal.

So what do you think then? Worth the saving?

I can neither confirm or deny I'm afraid.

Does the make / model of the bike really matter?

Just wanted some opinions on whether you guys think a £150 discount on a £650 bike is worth it, considering I won't have any warranty or the backup of a real shop.

I think in this situation i'd rather save the £150. If that is infact the bike you are buying in that link. If there are any problems with it, it is difficult to deal with as they are based in germany. At least if there are problems with the second hand one you can use the £150 to rectify them.

That being said, i wouldn't buy that bike in the first place. But you won't say if it is that.

Thanks but it's not the bike in the link and is in fact a UK bike from a UK shop.

    Does that change things?

    Me too.

I thought it was a pretty simple question.

Don't seem to be able to get a straight answer though.

Simple answer is No. There is no way I'd take the risk to save what amounts to a couple of tanks or petrol or a decent meal for two. But at other times in my life (when £150 was more than a month's spending money) I'd have made a different choice. At the end of the day it depends on how important £150 is to you and nobody else can answer that.

    Cheers,

    Andy

If you know how to spanner a bike and can do checks/repairs yourself, I'd take the punt if it meant saving that much towards future costs, if you can't, then it's not worth it.

If its white bike from a very large orange badged chain then I looke at the same one week before last and the same second hand advert I'd say he's asking to much for it my reason being I looked at that bike and was going for it new then looked at second hand prices and they were selling for 400-450 max in new condition apart from one seller that wanted 500 I ended up getting a cube acid rrp 775 in green/grey for 380 in same condition

Standard stuff. Bikes offered by pikeys are all described like this.

Does he want to meet you in a car park somewhere to do the deal?

I'd go along, draw your breath a lot, kick the tyres and knock the price down.

Personally though I'd push the LBS for a discount if you want it cheaper, or see if they'll throw in an extra for free if you hesitate over buying it.
