Headset Play

I fitted my new Superstar semi integrated headset today and went out for a ride. I couldn't feel any play when I tightened the top cap up but there was a HUGE amount when I was on the trails (lots of knocking). As far as I know the crown race, cups and bearings are all fitted correctly. No gaps when I pressed in the cups. There is maybe a 3-5mm gap between the top of the steerer and the top of the stem. How far down should the star nut be? I'm going out now to see if there's a problem with it as it was the only thing I didn't change. Any help will be greatly appreciated - for once I thought I'd done something right but evidently not! :?

Starnuts should be about a cm down.
The stem bolts were loose when you adjusted the top cap, weren't they?0 -
Thats okay then and yep it was. It took it apart again there and removed a metal washer - it seems to have done the trick. I can't feel any play at the moment. I think I may have done something wrong with the compression ring the first time. Isn't it just meant to sit between the steerer and upper bearings?0
