Doing routine maintenance & removing my Shimano SM-BB51 to replace it as I think some muck had got in there & it's stripped the thread on the left side (non drive). No idea how as when it was last put on it went on as normal, no probs at all!

Can I get the thread re cut? Frame is a Marin 2011 Nailtrail & is alloy

Fudges in Epsom (my LBS) said they couldn't do it & would need to go to a specialist engineer. They said they could sell my a different type of BB instead but I'd need a new crank etc.

    By being a bit clever/cheeky I've fixed it :D

Using the logic that steel is stronger than alloy I got the original internal BB (thankfully I didn't throw it away!) & fitted the crank side then very slowly & carefully re fitted the left side & it re cut the thread for me. Wound it in & out 10 times or so, each time with WD40 to clean the threads & now all back together.

Won't get to use it till the commute in the morning but hopefully shouldn't be a problem
