Fork advice for 456 build

So, going to build a 456 up, probably carbon, but hopefully the question applies to both.
I want it to be a fairly "hardcore" build, but I want to be able to use it for the occasional club ride, which is just fast (boring) xc stuff.
So, I was initially thinking RS Revs, 150mm. But then on searching, found that sektors are available in 150/120 dual position.
There's not much weight difference, about 200g in the revs favour, but I'm thinking the sektors will give the bike the better chance at excelling at both hard hitting and more xc orientated.
They both come in 15/20mm maxle which I want and both seem to get really good reviews and are very similar price.

So, any major reason not to get the sektors? Or am i reading too much into the extra travel badness for xc stuff?

I ride 150mm revs for xc and it involves a 5 mile road ride to and from the trails up a steep hill, and i have lived to tell the tale ;)

They lock out anyway if you are that way inclined.

They won't, as they share exactly the same lower legs and CSU. Only the internals make the weight difference.

I meant due to being able to wind them down to 120mm.

Ah, I see. Make sure the Sektor is the RL version though for compressio adjustment.

Worth notimg that the RL Rev is better than the RL Sektor as has adjustable floodgate and dual flow rebound.

Make sure you get crown lockout so you can adjust the compression damping

Compression damping can be adjusted via the remote lockout too on a poplock adjust(what mine came with). However, it keeps sticking and has now broken altogether. The crown lockout is definately the better option.

Avoid dual position air revelation forks-they are very unreliable and blow through the midstroke too much before ramping up a lot at the end. The standard dual air spring is much better.

Yeah, i used to have one and it wasn't a great design, hence i suggested crown adjust.

The only extra adjuster to go on the bars will be for the reverb, if/when funds allow :)

I've got 150mm Revs on my 456C, and before that I had a 100mm boardman HT. The 456 isn't a problem to ride boring stuff on. It's a bit wandery on steep climbs compared to the Boardman, but it's nothing that a bit of careful weight distribution doesn't solve.

You can adapt to riding most things uphill fairly well, it's like adjusting to a new saddle. It comes with time spent on the bike.

Aye, it should be fine, have no problems uphill currently on 160 mm enduro, apart from my girly legs.

Ordered forks last night, so no turning back now :)

sorry to hijack the thread - but i've been looking at getting a carbon 456. is there a weight limit for the rider on carbon bikes? i'm currently 13 1/2 stone but looking to slim down at least another stone. would i be OK riding a carbon 456 or better going for the steel one? i've always been a bit paranoid of carbon bikes for some reason, but the 456 looks sweet :D

 I wish I weighed 13 1/2 stone. It will be fine. The carbon frames are easily strong enough.
It's the wheelset that I had to be careful with.

Never thought about that, but then again, i'm a bit of a snake at under 13 so be fine.

I nearly bought a steel one (again), as they had them for £99 on Friday, but I would have still been thinking about the carbon. Just get it ordered :)

We'll be able to have a new section on here soon just for carbon owners

did you go for the revs from merlin? have you fitted them yet and if so are they OK?

Ordered the revs last night (black with red decals), bargain at £315, (not worth buying 2nd hand for that) couldn't find them anywhere else even close. So please don't post a link to any cheaper now :)

    They are the first bit to order, I have a few drivetrain bits in the garage, but today I shall be ordering;

C456 ltd matt black with black decals :)

    Superstar AM wheelset (black)

Then throughout the week trying to find best deals on SLX kit, brakes, prob chainset. It's going to be a mainly black, stealthy looking bike, with perhaps a red seatclamp post & grip locks to match the red dropouts.

Then need some matt finish heli tape to keep it all chip free.

    Which are you going for??

I've seen a bright yellow one (on line) not sure if it was on here though. What, have a colour mix or yellow and black, wasp style !

Thanks for that, but have everything apart from chainset (thinking double n bash), BB and front mech.

Haha, was just going to post asking about this, but you've convinced me already :)

As to wheels, would these http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=40&products_id=347

be a better option than these http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=40&products_id=535

I went for a yellow carbon 456. If you want to see what it looks like in yellow and black check this thread. Have had marmite comments, but I think it looks ace:

Pretty good so far. Just got back from my first (short) ride on it. Ride wise it doesnt feel too far removed from my summer season geometry wise, but its about 4.5lbs lighter as I've got different forks and front wheel from that bike too.

I read both of the very conflicting reviews on Bike radar before I took the plunge - see below. It seems they can't make up their minds and they are supposed to know what they are talking about!!!! I'm hoping its stiff but comfy....

December 2010 456 carbon bike radar review says "Although this is a super-stiff frame, the light build and inherent vibration damping qualities of carbon give this bike a lithe, agile feel that’s completely at odds with its ability to swallow boulders whole. With 140mm of travel plugged into a chassis that’s incredibly resistant to twist and flex, it’s no surprise the On-One descends well. But the low weight and comfy vibration-absorbing frame also make light work of climbs, giving this bike genuine potential for all-day epics".

March 2012 456 carbon bike radar review "The brutal stiffness of the mainframe gave us a proper beating through our hands and feet even on short – albeit rocky – descents. In fact, if we didn’t pull over and shake our hands out halfway down the hill, arm pump became a real problem when trying to keep pace with the other, more forgiving bikes."

Weird... Guess it just shows different people like different things in bikes (or someone has something against on-one!).

Do you mean one of these? http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_ ... cts_id=287

If so do you just need a 10 adapter for yor wheels ans then this goes into the QR dropout?

    that does look lovely 8)

i can't afford a whole new bike right now so i'm thinking of selling my HT to fund the 456 frame and swapping all the kit off my full susser onto it :?
