quick 8 / 9 speed question

I have a son of strongarm (specialized) new chainset from ages ago, designed for eight speed set up from late 90's. If I want to use this on a new nine speed set up would I have any compatability issues? if not I can get a new nine speed cassette and chain and get the bike fixed up quickly and cheaper so hoping it will be ok.

I know 10 speed and 9 don't mix but couldn't see any issue with this....but waiting to be told otherwise!

Usually 9 speed chains work fine on 8 speed rings - but I can't vouch for all combos.

The cassette must be used with 9 speed. (or ten!)

By chainset do you mean the crankset - if so the chainrings will be fine with nine speed. You may get away with mechs. Cassette and chain wont be useful.

Craker, yes I meant the crankset (I always call it chainset but we're talking about the same thing)>

I have 9 speed shifters, mechs etc so it was just the compatability of the chain, chainrings and chain I was worried about but looks like i will be fine ordering a 9 speed cassette and chain.

    Thanks for the replies!
