Yep, I'm in for the long one. I did the long one back in 2007 and the medium route in 2008. If ICC put on an event half as good as the old ones put on by BC Yorkshire it will be a cracking (if very painful!!) day.
  • Did anyone else ride this?

It was what can diplomatically be described as a "challenging" course, though at least Mother Nature played fair by holding off the rain and maintaining the wind direction so we had a tailwind home.

Superb organisation by the good folk of Ilkley Cycling Club. The best sportive I've ever ridden, and the only UK one where I've not managed to get myself lost!

Thanks to all concerned from Wallace, Gromit, Shaun the Sheep and Preston the Cyberdog. :D

yep, pleased the rain held off, and the sun came out towards the end, just in time for the last climb!

The 20+%ers were cruel as was the headwind first half of the ride, I couldnt find a group :(

managed the long one - good fun day out!
  • I got in a group for the 10k into the first feedstation, but otherwise Mrs W&G and I rode on our own until we rejoined the medium route. It's amazing how so many cyclist can just disappear, though the Dales are pretty spacious, I suppose...

I did this too - cracking ride, but I got lost on the final stretch and missed the last hill climb. My time was classed as "non-competitive" due to missing the final timing point, but I was more than releived as I think it would have finished me off completely!

great route and well organised. i've said on cyclosport that its my favourite sportive, its probably my second favourite actually behind richmond. the only reason i can think why is that the names of the climbs at richmond mean something to me from my top 100 climbs book.

something i'd change for next year would be to finish it at the top of the last climb. it would save the not particularly exciting last 4 miles and also give you chance to have a bit of a race against your mates up a hill, instead of on a flat road.

other than that, great event. if i decide to do any sportives next year this will deifnately be one of them

Yes, fabulous if somewhat hard event, arguably harder than the first three WRCs a few years ago. I got in with a group of three or four at Greenhow Hill and we shared the pace all the way round. I eventually got dropped before Thorpe but still finished in a time and position I'm happy with (long route).

Regarding the wind, it felt like a headwind for more like 3/4 of the way round. I expected a big tailwind from the left turn at Ribblehead viaduct and, whilst there was a bit of a tailwind at first it seemed to fizzle out and turn into cross/head for the remainder to Settle.

Loved that back lane approach into Settle, almost felt like I was on the continent! Thank god the tailwind started in Settle otherwise I've no idea how I could have got up that brute of a climb! Great tailwind and sun out after the final feed at Airton too.

I tend to agree with your view here but I imagine they did this to make the descent into Ilkley a bit safer. Where we had to turn sharp left on the descent, if you follow the road straight down directly towards Ilkley and the HQ, you go down an extremely steep descent with a side T junction at great speed. I've almost been wiped out twice when cars have come out of the T junction and either not seen me, or misjudged my speed on the descent.

Thanks to all the folk involved from Ilkley CC, fabulous organisation and enthusiastic support.

Finally, is anyone who rode the WRC going to do the Marmotte?

yep, this was my last "long" ride before the big day... finished both the dragon and this one strongly with more in the tank, so starting to look forward to it now! Doing a couple of 70 milers this w/e then tapering down...

    excited!

What's your dossard No. for Marmotte - I'm 5908. I suppose there's a slim cance we might bump into each other (not literally!) on the ride. What kind of time are you hoping for in the Marmotte?
