Trouble putting Nic on Stan's...

I am having an absolute nightmare trying to get a 2.25" Nobby Nic Evo Triple Nano (UST) tyre onto a Stan's ZTR Arch EX rim (new SS custom build) - Not going Tubeless (yet) so just a standard installation.
Have spent well over an hour on it so far! Luckily I'm at home but If I get a flat out on the trail I'm gonna be in trouble.
Thinking of going for 2.2" Conti Rubber Queen's (BC) at some point - anyone know if I'm gonna have the same issues with those tyres on the Stan's rims?
Also - Superstar rim tape seems pretty loose. Anyone else notice this on SS custom builds?

The new tubeless ready style Schwalbe's do not fit on Crest rims. The diameters are just incompatible. The UST will probably have the same bead type as the new TR so will be slightly smaller inside diameter to help with seating.
The Arch EX has the same style of bead lock as the Crest so will be suffer same problems.
I can confirm that non-ust Nic's fit on fine.2011 KHS Full Susser Carbon 29er Race BuildClank wrote:M'eh, I might just go back to zapping it with frikken lay-zur beeeems. And sharks.0 -
Yeah - still no joy. Could take it down to the LBS but not sure what they could do that I can't. The only other tyre I've got is a Spesh Resolution - lucky it's a quite damp up in the mountains at the moment because those tyres are very sketchy in the dry!
So 'presume' I shouldn't have any issues with non-UST Rubber Queen then?

They're not incompatible, but they're chuffing tight, as you're finding. No real way around it frankly.
Non-UST tyres will be fine, the older Schwalbes go on and seal fantastically if you can track any down!0 -
Thanks njee20.
Destroying my hands and fingers over here! And would rather not ding my shiny new rim
Will stick the Spesh Resolution on the front (Stan's rim) and put the NN on the rear (Sun rim) and await the end of the month when I can order the Black Chilli Rubber Queen's.

suffered the same last year with this issue, the schwalbe tubeless were a nightmare to try and fit onto a crest rim, so much so that i ended up knackering the beading
reverted back to standard schwalbe tyres and sealed perfectly, no problems with sealing with no-tubes0 -
Yeh, It took a bit of effort to get my Nics (TR double defence jobs) fitted to my Arch EX rims. Once I actually got them on though, they sealed really well, inflated with just a regular hand pump.
Decent tyre levers, and a bit of soapy water does the trick nicely.0 -
Don't do it!
I had the same issue with some conti USTs on the stans rims. Total BALLACHE. Cut Knuckles, snapped tyre levers, sweating, swearing. - Stans list such tyres as being compatible. But I think unless you have a bucket of soapy water to hand each time, it will be a struggle. I''ll wager that when you do blow out on a trail...the last thing you will have is a bucket of water with you.
TBH - I think anything UST will be a struggle on the stans. My other rims are XT, and the same tyres pop on by hand.
TR is a much more realistic proposition. I've easily fitted Rocket Rons and Bonty Mud X's to the stans with ease.0 -
I've had the same problem trying to get my high rollers on my crest rims. Had to use hot soapy water to lube and soften tyre and also lubed the wheel rim. But like the original OP said. What happens if you get a puncture in the woods?----

Nobby Nic Evo SnakeSkin non-UST (2011/2010 model?) on Flows here. Very smooth putting the tires on and off.0

are you using the superstar rim tape? if so, bin it. it is shite. coupla wraps of electrical tape and you'll be good to go.0
-
I had a hell of a job getting the Racing Ralphs on my Crest rims first time, but after taking them off because the labels didn't line up, I found they slipped on much easier second time around.0

Me too, the "tubeless ready" Nobby Nic 2.1 I put on my Flow rim went on easy, and was also a sod to get to inflate tubeless. I guess the Crest must have a taller rim.0 -
I guess it could be worth the effort if you're going tubeless but I think I'll wait to get the back ArchEX and a pair of non-UST BC Rubber Queens before I go there.
Btw - the Spesh Resolution must of gone on the rim in about 10secs flat although there was a thorn in it so put a hole in my new inner tube as soon as I inflated it - school boy error

you have completly defied the point of having stans rims right there. why buy tubeless rims and then use tubes? confuses me totally.
i no some people recommend running a tube in the tyre to help give it shape/stretch it a bit. but i never have and haven't had any problems because of it.
i certainly dont think it would helped that TR nobby nic either. would have been just as hard to get on.2011 KHS Full Susser Carbon 29er Race BuildClank wrote:M'eh, I might just go back to zapping it with frikken lay-zur beeeems. And sharks.0 -

huh? So buy a non-tubeless rim now then when I want to go tubeless in a couple of months buy the tubeless rim then? Makes perfect sense?
...and what would be the point of going tubeless on only one wheel (especially as it's the back tyre I want to get lower pressures on) and with only a tyre that is useless in the conditions I ride 99% of the time?"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

I'm having same issue with fat albert on an arch ex. Had same issue with nobby on my crests.
I think the rim tapes are to thick because its so tight. If you use a strong (but very thin) pvc tape they're a lot easier. Means they go into the centre more and you get that teeny bit of extra play.
I'd forgotten this from last time, I'll try tonight and post on here if it works.0 -
If it's any consolation they are only hard the first few times. I had a struggle putting Racing Ralph on 29er Arch Ex rims, but after a couple of re-fits they slip on and off just fine now.0
-
Yes, I've had that before, but its the rims that are new and not the tyre. It was on my crest before. Which should have exact same profile.
Didn't get round to it last night after my ride so I'll try tonight with different tapes.0 -
Funnily enough, after posting about initially having trouble getting a 29er TLR Racing Ralph on an Arch Ex rim I put a brand new 29er TLR Nobby Nic on the same rims last night and it went on as easy as anything. Didn't even need to use tyre levers.
Reading your comment about it being a new rim makes me wonder whether it was the rims rather than the tyres that caused me problems at first. I put the Racing Ralph on to brand new rims, which I had just taped. Maybe the tape wasn't pressed firmly enough into the well at first, but has bedded down now that I've used them a bit. Just a thought.0 -
I've already got some Hans Dampf to go on some ARCH EX (on order.) Am I gonna struggle with that!?0
-
Stan's rims aren't UST rims, therefore UST tyres won't fit them. I bought a set once and had exactly the same problem.
As I understand it, UST tyres are heavier than Tubeless Ready, so stick to Tubeless Ready tyres on Stan's.sanchez89 wrote:The new tubeless ready style Schwalbe's do not fit on Crest rims. The diameters are just incompatible.XC: Giant Anthem X

As a response to these problems we all seem to be having, I've sorted mine at least 8) . Fat Albert on to an Arch EX with no problem (with 1 tyre lever). Plus it is UST.
Schwalbe tyres are so tight you have to get it into the centre channel really well (based on experience of Nobbys, M Marys as well). I've replaced slightly thick Hope rim tape (came with all their wheels) with 25mm wide, specialist supplied, super expensive, super tape .... well a £3 roll of green gaffa tape actually .
It's really thin, perfect fit, strong and the coating is slippy and helps the bead pop out at low pressure. I've just popped mine on no problem and it sealed to 40psi with no sealant in it yet.
The tape I used -- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271062194565
Picture of it on -- http://postimg.org/image/6tvf1q6x9/
Hope this helps. After snapping 2 levers last week's attempts I was ready to smash my brand new wheel!0 -
The more I think about it the more convinced I am that the problems I had fitting Racing Ralphs on Arch Ex 29er rims were more due to the way I applied the Stans rim tape than the tyres and rims themselves. You need to give it a really strong pull when you apply the rim tape to get it to press down into the well, otherwise the tyre bead won't sit in the well and you have a fight on your hands to get it to fit.0
-
I now always stick down the bit of tape into the well by running my thumb over that as I go. The edges really are irrelevant and can be done after.
... sometimes I do crave the ease of inner tubes... well, until I see a mate changing the same wheel twice on a ride! :twisted:0 -

To answer my own question, yes. Yes, you are going to find it frigging impossible to get the Hans Dampf on the frigging rims!
From reading the above answers, am I to understand that if I apply thinner rim tape, that could make all the difference?
The tyres say tubeless ready as oppose to UST. Although it appears some people say UST fit, some don't, some say Schwalbe fit, some don't.0 -
from my experience the tape does make a difference. mine seemed impossible to. can't speak for Hans dampf. But can for muddy mary, nobbys, fat Albert. hope that helps.0

Had the same problem putting a Nobby Nic Evo on a Crest rim with Stans yellow tape. Mega tight - I Used soapy water and pushing the tyre well into the wheel well and finally got them on only to find out the tyre wouldn't seal as it had a faulty sidewall (I didn't use tyre levers either). When I did get the replacement tyre on I hated the way it handled and have gone back to my previous brand. So I'm not a fan of them but that's just my opinion.
I would also like to say that I found it really helpful when other forum users told me how easy it was to get their tyres on without offering any useful advice - well done to all of you!! :roll:0 -
Quick Update: My wheel/tyre combo are fine now. I had to modify my duct tape only approach. I added a single wrap of cheap pvc tape onto the spoke holes. NOW it holds air brilliantly and the duct tape protects the pvc tape.
Also homemade air compressor using a 3l cider bottle and some rubber hose worked amazingly for loose fitting tyres.0
