Hi guys,

im not sure if im posting this in the right area, but im just starting my new build of a Kona Dawg Supreme. i got the frame last week with a fox float RP23 rear shock seatpost clamp and seat post. Im taking some parts off of my old frame which was a Hot Chili Zynga?!(i think) frame with a retro XT setup.

if anyone is at all interested in my build i would be more than happy to upload pictures and descriptions as i go. if not, then i wont bother.

just a quick low down on what ive got to start with.

new set of Hayes stroker ryde disc brakes.
9 Speed setup. i have the front and rear mech, but no shifters yet.
i do have the crankset but in due course (next paypacket) ill be getting a new one.
Nokon gear cables/blue outer house.
i have the old rims and tyres from my old bike, so ill be using those to save a bit of cash.

let me know what you think.

Cheers Tj

Of course it should. The kitchen is a multi-functioning room/surface. can someone tell me where to look, or how to actually upload the pictures onto the post as as you can see mine didnt work. ive posted pictures to flickr, but other than adding the link i havent a clue how to post the pictures. would be much appreciated.
  • when you post select the img button go onto your photo site e.g. Flickr and select the image and size you want right click on it and copy the image url and paste this in between the 2 (IMG)URL(IMG)

Right then, an update from the weekend.

Firstly I has my Chris King headset put in for me by the local bike shop (7 minutes) not bad ey.

Whilst I was there I took a shining to some nice blue Peaty grips

So when I got back home after playing a game of rugby I quickly put on my Ritchey stem, my ROOX handle bar and obviously the Peaty grips.

    Tidy.

I'd find a 4 bolt stem, the 2 bolt caps are never been that secure IME.

    A speedo???

Thanks for the tip. I'm hoping to eventually get a new set of forks as well. But I will look into a 4 bolt stem.

    Speedo, speedometer, cycling computer.

I don't intend to. I was just quickly putting them on to take some pictures. I had a little fiddle around with the Nokon gear cables last night. If you read the instructions they are quite easy to do, but me being a typical bloke! Who needs instructions? Well I do!! After having put them on, I then realised my mistake. So tomorrow will be my bike day to sort it out and get some more kit put on it. I did have a question, but I've completely forgotten it! Typical. When I think of it, I'll post it.

    The latest. My items turned up in the post today from CRC. It did take a good week and a half. But I've managed to get it all setup so it runs all nice and smoothly. The gears run perfectly through all of them with one click of the shifters. However, I do have one question;

    Does this look right???

when its on the largest front and the largest rear gear, the chain is very taught, and the rear mech looks very pulled forward!

    6967404098_11da64d30b_z.jpg

This is what it looks like when its on the largest one at the front and the smallest one at the back.

    6967407276_9e6897ee65_z.jpg

In all fairness I won't be using the extreme gears of small on small and large on large, but when its on the two smallest gears, front and rear, then the chain is really loose!!

    6967413204_951429d41f_z.jpg

Any advice on this would be great. I am using an old Shimano XT Deore rear mech shifter that looks to be with a short cage. If I where to use a long cage would it make any difference??

Also my hydraulic hoses, and my wire for my cycling computer looks really messy, does anyone have a good picture of how to make it nice and tidy? I've run out of energy to think logically.

Pretty sure with a triple up front you need a long cage rear mech to allow for the range.

Hmm, that might well me the case, but the bike that I took it off was also a 3 spped upfront and 9 speed rear. But it might be a purchase for next month if its going to solve the issue. Cheers

It depends on cassette you using. On 11-32 rear mid cage works OK.

I've been thinking about it, and I'm going to get a nice brand new long cage rear mech, i may as well whilst im at it get a new front mech and then keep the ones that i have now as spares. As you never know what can happen. I'm debating whether to get the Shimano XT or the XTR front and rear mech. I've been looking at the XTR rear mech 9spd M971 and the front mech 9spd M971 which together will set me back around £140 or the XT rear mech M971 and the XT rear mech M971 whch will set me back about £85. What are people's opinions?? I'm alsogoing to get myself a Magic Shine MJ-816 front light linked with my fibre flair rear light which is well worth the money. Hope everyone is having a good weekend :)

I'm not sure that you need a new mech, but wouldnt want to stand in the way of anyone purchasing bike bling!

I think you could even possibly get away with at least another link out of the chain (though hard to see exactly from the photos) when running big and big. To take up the slack in the chain when small small, there is a tiny screw (well there is on my rear mech), kind of behind the large bolt that connects the mech to the frame. Screw this in and it should push against the mech hanger on the frame and pushes the cage and body of the mech backwards to tension up the chain. Somebody else might be along sooner with the proper names for what I'm trying to describe.

    Bike looks good though!

    Hi,
thanks for the advice. Looking at it, it seems like I could probably take out another 3-4 links! I might give it a go and see how I get on. I know the screw you mean, I might need to take the hole lot off again and give it a good clean and lube up again as all of the screws are rather stiff. Cheers.
