I am seeking advice with regards to my handlebar and stem set up on my 2008 fsr stumpjumper comp, size: large. It currently has stock specialised handlebar - 640 mm width and a specialised stem which is 100mm in length with 8 degree rise. I tried a friend's specialised camber (size: large) who's handlebars are 720mm wide with a 90mm stem and preferred the control of the extra width of the handlebars. I am looking to purchase some Easton Haven handlebars which are 711mm width however I am unsure about the length of the stem. From many magazines, anything from 50mm to 70mm would suit a medium sized bike depending on your riding discipline. However, I am 6' 2'' with a size large bike and ride mainly trails, some downhill. I am thinking of buying the Easton Haven Stem to match the handlebars but not sure if I should get the 70mm, 85mm or 100mm. I am worried the 70 mm would be too short and I would be sat too far upright. Whereas the 100mm may be too long and make the steering twitchy on technical sections. Plus I have not taken into account the specialised stem has a rise but the Easton haven stem has no rise?????? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    3 things IMHO

1: The easton stem is ugly and overpriced, get yourself a prettier, lighter one for less money with 5 or maybe 8 degrees of rise. There are hundreds of better options. The bars on the other hand are awesome, good choice.
2: I would say 80mm is about right for a stumpy of that vintage. the frame was quite long but not that long by current standards (even just 4 years later), especially if you're tall.
3: Why not change one or the other first, so you know how that feels, then change the other item to suit best what you now have?

    this

work out what stem works best first

the extra width bar will alter your ride, but people underestimate the impact a different length stem has over this IMO

I have ordered the Easton Haven Bars but still can't decide on a Stem.....the alternative was a Thomson X4 80mm length with 10 degree rise. I am worried Easton Haven stem has no rise and this could be a issue?

Any other stems i should consider?

just get some cheapo 2nd hand stems off ebay till you figure out what works

then spend some cash on one to keep
