Buying bike bits without the wrath from OH

I've found the perfect way of doing it.

Ordered two new Planet X RT57s rental bikes the other day with full support from Mrsrc1 and our recently ordered LDT jerseys arrived today accompanied by a cooing rather than a telling off for wasting money.

Only slight issue is that the bikes are both too small for me to ride and we have to sell the jerseys, but I still got the thrill of N+2ing and pouring over spec sheets

It's all about the thrill of pulling the order trigger. That being said, I'll still have the bikes - they just won't get used by me (which largely describes most N+1 purchases in any event I reckon).

hmm you order 2 biks and 2 jerseys, none of which were the ride size. you need to buy a tape measure pal.

What size/spec have you gone for in the end?

The bikes are rentals for Le Domestique Tours and the Jerseys (all 20 of them) are Le Domestique Tours ones for selling so I should be ok!

We've got a Medium and a Large RT57 in white and blue with SRAM Rival compacts (26t at the back so should cope with the worst of the gradients) and decent spec finishing kit and wheels. We'll probably add an X Large and possibly a Small in the next few months, but M and L covers most bases (I could probably just about fit on a Large and I'm 6ft2). They should come in at around the 7kg mark which is perfect for the mountains!

I did consider going for Force but the carbon cranks on mine get scratched and scraped quite easily so decided alloy is probably a better bet for longevity/replacement bits given that they'll live a pretty hard life.

Will get pictures up on the website as soon as they arrive.

I just had a quick look at your website. That LDT kit is really smart.

Cheers - we were hoping for understated cool and think we have got it! The design credit has to go to Andy at http://www.wildoo.co.uk/ who was brilliant. If any clubs are looking at low price kit quotes without massive minimum orders then I'd highly recommend him!

If only it were that easy ...

I'm resigned to buying a new bicycle a component at a time in the hope that swmbo won't notice eventually that my Trek Pilot has somehow transmogrified in to a Surly LH disc Trucker 26". Having parts delivered to work helps too, but having a joint bank account doesn't!

    So the jerseys:

And the bikes (fresh out of the box so forgive the crazy high saddles):

    Size L

    Size M

    7074222513_969964e200.jpg

Bikes are available to hire on all our tours and in the UK subject to you passing my dodgyness test

Edit: Changed the pic of the Size M due to misaligned crank

Back to the original question - sell stuff on eBay to build up some PayPal credit and get stuff delivered to work then it's invisible transactions. Not that I've done this, I just face the music afterwards unless its a major investment in which case the justification starts well in advance :)

In the PC trade we refer to this practice as stealth upgrading, getting a case with a side panel Window makes it a bit tricky since the bits are on show. Same with a bike.

I would have gotten away with it on the bike if it wasn't for those meddling kids noticing all the upgrades:

"Dad, can I get some pedals like those new ones you got"

I want to do a nine speed upgrade soon (seven speed cassettes are so last millennium) but I can just imagine:

"Dad can I have twenty seven gears on my bike too"
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.
